while everybody is taking sides either with kp or ecb... one thing with which everyone seems to agree is that the kp-gate could have been managed better...behind closed doors...sans selective leaks...

since kp-gate is flooded with inane articles...for...against...i don't want to waste much time in adding my two cents...

having said that...however...i particularly liked shane warne's views that a parent body and captain should be capable enough to manage different personalities...characters...

that its not important to be liked by team mates...as every player in the team is there to do a job...and its the job of management to work around players to achieve team goals...

this is where strauss and ecb have failed in my view...

we too have a case here that desperately need attention and i genuinely feel dhoni in general and bcci in particular have failed in managing a career...

sree santh's...

he is a character...he can be a drama queen...he can be all this and that...

but he can bowl...

when he bowls...the upright seam and swing is a delight...not only to fans but purists alike...

he might pump fists returning back to his mark...he might appeal a bit long laced with drama...he might stare a batsmen on his follow through...but he is not the first bowler to do that...he will not be the last bowler to do that...

he can go overboard at times...but one thing which is clear and indisputable...he wants wickets with every ball he bowls...he is an attacking bowler with a heart...

he is what we see...but we don't necessarily see what he is...

if only he is not judged by his every expression...every flux of his muscle...every delivery he bowls...his every move on and off field...

if only we don't follow him like he is a terrorist that can explode a bomb any minute...we might still able to save a career...

a bowler who can bowl...a bowler that team india needs so desperately...but don't want to admit...

i hope and wish that when he makes a comeback...he would be given due space but more importantly the management will do away with the glasses tinted with skepticism whenever he is around...

warm-up games were better in my days...

so, it seems, we have seen apple falling from tree and discovered the law of gravity...

the parallel of above analogy for team india's beyond dismal performance has boiled down to warm up games...

even the bcci has seen the light and asked for one more warm-up game before the boxing day test... and lo... all team india being slow starter problem will be solved... 

this thought it so nobel and yet so simple that i am surprised how we missed it...?

more warm-up games...

i am sure (not even) the second xi players (which is a norm now for warm up games) will give enough match practice to our team... they will indeed push us so hard that we will be properly warmed before the boxing day test... never mind the fact that if that was the case... we would have been giving the same medical treatment to england team by now that we have been receiving... from the second test onwards...

this reminds me of what gary kirsten said in his last public appearance before he took the offer of coaching south africa team...

Kirsten thought before he joined the team, the Indian team did not know how to prepare for a game.

“If I had to rate it out of 10, I thought the way the Indian players practised was about 1 or 2. Basically, what I realised was there was no connection between preparation and play. We just upped the ante on our preparation and we had real purpose to everything we did and then the Indian team probably became the hardest working and preparation team in the world. From 2 we went to 7 or 8.”

are we missing a real story here...?

why duncan fletcher...?

now that the news of duncan fletcher has started to sink in... i started to wonder whether fletcher was the only realistic candidate to coach team india left with as the reports filtering out wants me to believe...?

the template of team india coach was more or less set by gary kirsten...

a coach that has a formidable record... a fierce competitor but not on your face kinda competitor... a trier who will keep coming at you... likes only his work do the talking... likes to remain in background... allergic to media... should have seen the game from close quarters to understand and know the demands of modern game... the more recent one the better...

duncan fletcher meets some of the requirements but if only india not kept its eyes set obsessively on foreign shores it could have easily found the man that fits the above template to the T...

anil kumble...

the man is one of the best match winner india has produced... a fierce competitor but never crossed the line... genuinely respected in cricketing circles... one of the architect of team india being numero uno... knows all players inside out... specially could have been the guiding influence on young players hence could have handled the imminent transition phase more aptly than the most... never runs to talk to media but when he does cricket world listens...

contrary to many beliefs... "only one team was playing with the spirit of game" statement kumble made did more in capturing the gravity of the sydney-gate... made them rise from the slumber to act than the so called arm twisting methods of bcci...

has seen the game evolved from as close quarters as one could get... and most importantly knows exactly where the heart and mind is... of himself and that of indian cricket...

but as i said if only bcci and team think tank were bit more flexible and not obsessed with looking over the shoulder...

pp's latest post on his blog smoke signal has this very interesting little passage about how icc anti corruption unit (ACU) function...

Said ICC president and his personally chosen successor are so invested in a ‘zero tolerance’ policy that they agreed to allow the ICC’s anti-corruption unit to monitor the 2009 edition of the IPL. Remember how that came about?

The ICC offered the services of its unit; the BCCI sat on the request for months, taking no action whatsoever. When the news hit the media, the BCCI pushed back, saying the ICC was charging an inordinate sum for its services. It turned out that the ICC’s bill for having its inspectors present at all venues, rigorously covering the games and off-field activities, was $1.2 million — a paltry sum when contrasted with what the BCCI was earning from the IPL. When its ‘exorbitant charge’ excuse began to look threadbare, the BCCI promised to ‘study the issue’ and ‘arrive at a solution’. It finally did — on April 17, 2009, it told the ICC that the Anti-Corruption and Security Unit was welcome to monitor the IPL.

The catch? The BCCI had green-lighted the ACSU late afternoon of the day before the IPL actually kicked off. In other words, by sitting on the proposal for months, the BCCI had effectively ensured that the ACSU would not have the time to deploy its personnel to provide adequate safeguards [typically, the ACSU works on a series or tournament two to three months before the start deadline].

so is it safe to assume that icc's acsu that charges millions for its services... would have deployed it's inspectors two to three months in advance and during the england pakistan 'spot fix' series...?

john howard: an exposé...

fellow bloggers kartikeya of 'a cricketing view'... soulberry of 'the cricket watcher's journal' and achettup of 'short of a length' have covered, dissected and exposed the hypocrisy of howardgate and how it is managed and reported in media that there is nothing much left to add...

as usual... largely bcci 'the mother of all cricketing ills' is the focal point of all the venom that has been spit in press and media in the name of journalism... you do not have to be a rocket scientist to see the concentrated 'efforts' they are putting up one after another is coz of hurt that has caused their ego to take over senses...

now my question is... if one is stooping to the level of calling president of one of the associate board 'a buffoon' and another calls journalist 'a tabloid tv jock' and tries to stuff words in his mouth to please his argument... resorting to name names unapologetically... arguing like either you are on my side or you are wrong... using media to vent venom instead of airing well rounded views... thereby abusing the power of media because they can... then with what face and credibility they are asking icc or more accurately bcci to behave...?

so to me this howardgate has exposed many 'experts' and their so called 'insight' to me... since they are in no mood to listen as slithering ego and anger has blocked all voices of reasoning... i must thank icc and bcci for the exposé...

india's exit: whom to blame... dhoni or selectors...?

dhoni because...

the flexibility for which dhoni used to be known for has been replaced by some fixed notions as far as his leadership goes... his insistence on preferring pathan and jadeja over specialists has started to hurt india badly... even when selector gave him specialist spinners in the form of mishra and ojha... he kept preferring pathans... for the 'balance' sake... its not only the caribbean even in sri lanka where pitches and conditions were more conducive to spin... he did not play mishra...

he has also started to take 'reactive' decisions... in champions trophy first he said we can't play extra bowler coz it disturbs the balance of the team... then after a defeat and facing elimination... he said extra bowler helps coz you don't have to score that many runs... even in the crunch game his decision to bat first seems reaction to the criticism of bowling first decisions earlier rather than on sound logic...

he kept on bowling first when he did not had bowlers who could exploit the conditions and in crunch game yesterday he opted to bat when the situation was similar to say impending rain... when you want to chase coz you want to keep pace with revised target... but he chose to bat instead coz that appeared more convenient to him...

this goes to show how defensive he has become and do not want to push himself as well as the team... he seems content in the comfort zone... so does the team...

selectors because...

when your chief selector pledges in front of nation, after first test fiasco against south africa, that he will never select players who are not fully fit... and went on to do so for no less than a world cup... what can you do...?

the selections were based on reputations rather than form... the thinking was clear... stuff the team with batsmen coz t20 is a batsman game... and chawla's selections indicated that... who was apparently preferred over mishra and ojha for his batting skills... but they forgot that you just cannot bat and bat... but have to bowl too to defend the total... and no amount of big hitting can defend bad bowling...

dhoni was just not given bowlers to fall back on... instead he was given assembly of part times... it came as no surprise that when situation demanded dhoni could not find bowler to throw the ball to knowing he will give his 100%...

the squad for the world cup should be like where every player can make it into final xi depending upon conditions... situations... but we carried 3-4 passengers in a squad of 15 when even some main players were not close to the top form!

where does this leave captain...? what options dhoni had to maneuver...?

selectors stint thus far has been rank conservative that lacks vision... and if they continue to do so... this will erase everything what team india has achieved of late... despite their insipidity... and one wonders they are actually paid 40 lakhs a year for this crap!!

bcci... attention please... i can do as bad a job for even 10 lakhs per annum... or i might actually...

bcci has shown willingness to re-schedule the upcoming seven odi series in october in india... to two tests and three one day series in order to appease their newly found 'test loving' stance... purists are already celebrating the news as if heaven has opened the gate for us... but sorry for spoiling your party... i would like to differ...

bcci in its zest must not forget that they are what they are coz of one day internationals... much before t20 and more precisely ipl happened in india... it was ODIs that kept bcci laughing all the way to its banks... and now that the health of ODIs is in danger... how can they leave it high and dry to die unattended...?

but more importantly what about no.1 ranking in ODIs...?

we are currently happily placed at no.1 in tests already and as homer argues here at bored nothing is going to change even if we sweep the two test series... but if we win the 7 odi series it will not only avenge last series loss but it will also help us inch towards being numero uno in ODIs too...

besides... the seven match odi series will also help our young guns to get into groove... to get some tough match practice just before the 2011 world cup due to be hosted in february in subcontinent... and team india think tank will get close to identify the combination of players to make squad for the world cup...

so, as homer said at bored... JUST SAY NO!!!

we all know that lalit modi is suspended and is served notice for which he has been given 15 days time to answer it... though i wonder they would even bother to take a glance at the reply...

coming back to the point... the charges have been framed... elaborated by bcci president... shashank manohar... explaining the 'irregularity' in initial bids for rajasthan royals and kings xi punjab... the part which catches the eye...

"There is a clause in the agreement, which is entered into with all the franchises, that in case you transfer your shares, the transfer has to be made with the permission of the IPL and the board is entitled to have 5% of the amount of the transaction as their fees. Now nothing of this [sort] has happened. So we are asking an explanation, if A gives the bid, how do you sign agreement with B? How does (sic) all these people get into this? None of us are aware and we don't know who these companies are."

even after trying hard... i could not make the sense out of it... both franchise documents were signed three years ago... so all these three years you were in deep slumber... and now you suddenly woke up and say we did not know... and punish the one who kept awake all this while...?

if this was not enough to prove your selective amnesia... i chanced upon another gem of yours...

The BCCI chief said Modi would informed about contracts after he had signed them on behalf of IPL and the other parties and the GC will have to pass them as there were no other alternatives.

"And they are brought before the Governing Council after the contracts are signed. So the Governing Council has no other option and are presented with a fait accompli," Manohar said while explaining about the murky deals that have come under the scanner of the Income Tax and Enforcement Directorate departments.

err... wait a minute... did you just said all contracts used to come to you pre-signed and you (and GC) had no alternative but to sign them...? even if we believe it for a moment for the sake of argument... then how you would explain it with your your charges on modi that you (and gc) were not aware of any contracts or dealings done by him...?

do you really want us to take this bullshit as lollipop which will not only keep us busy but also keep our mouth shut sucking it...?

kotla fiasco: who will stand for us...?

while surfing i came across this interesting comment made by mathew gullick on kotla fiasco at line and length blog... excerpt from the comment goes like this...

I, too, have not seen any of the coverage from this game, but presumably even with an "unfit" track it would have been possible for both sides to have agreed to send down 50 overs of spin bowling in order to give the spectators a match.

now this is very interesting thought...

even if kotla pitch was unfit for play... the match (even if rescheduled one) could have taken place and innocent fans, who were sucked into buying tickets on the promise of watching their favorite players play a good game of cricket, could have been saved from the disappointment and frustration...

we have seen all pace attack in a game of cricket... then why not all spin attack... what is so outrageous about it that it can never be thought upon as an option...?

we have seen a captain proactively trying to squeeze in some overs from day's play by bowling spinners when danger of bad light looms... then why not the same urge to save a game for spectators...?

ddca did what they did... and going by their ability to dig new lows they will all be laughing silently as this gives them an opportunity to stuff more money in their coffers under the new head 'on account of damages by riotous crowd'... talk about seeing opportunity in adversity...

icc got the opportunity to score some brownie points on bcci to set some records straight... so even after the match went on for 24 overs the pitch was rated as 'unfit' instead of 'poor'...

media got the opportunity to blow it as they wish to... with an opportunity of a pregnant sequel...  for if the ban is say about two years... they will report it as... is bcci loosing its powers...?

or if the punishment is light by their 'standards' they will report it as how the bcci used its growing muscles to set the matter in their favors... talk about win-win situation...

but what about the common man who pays for a ticket from his pocket to see the match on ground... and gets punished for the 'crime'... nobody spares a thought for a fan who has made the game what it is today...

why it is so difficult to think about a paying fan... ?

growing racism in cricket...

no i am not talking about this racist incident against pakistan team... though one could very well imagine the uproar this news would have created had this happened to a visiting team in pakistan or for that matter subcontinent...

but here i am talking about the comment posted in cricinfo commentary during tea of first south africa vs england test being played at centurion...

It's been a fascinating first day and has clearly pleased someone calling himself KP "After 400-run test days; 800-run one-days here in India, its so eye-soothing; sense-fulfilling to see decent bowling; pitches with some life. Whoa! This year will be remembered for some splendid tests; so many dull ones. Hope Centurion belongs to the former."

here i am not against lavishing praise for the ongoing test pitch or bowling... but i am against this growing cricracism that every thing good has to be compulsory equated with cricketing 'filth' that is happening in india... to highlight the disparity... even if there is no obvious link...

but then why come sense of perspective come in way of india bashing...?

last time, i remember, when 400 runs were scored in a day of a test match... it happened in england... when england scored them against australia during 2005 ashes... the first time 800 runs or more were scored in a day in one day international match... that was played on south africa soil... and both time it was praised as the celebration of attacking and exciting cricket at its best... and rightly so...

but when the same happened in india... it must be discarded as dull cricket without ever feeling the need to check things... to make an example out of that...

these so called 'experts' can go to any length to achieve pre-conceived conclusions... to give you few examples...

india can not be no. 1 in test ranking coz we 'choked' in the hyderabad one day match... or we can not justify being no. 1 coz we don't have a star fast bowler...

so when india scores 400 runs in a day of a test... when one of india's proudest son scores almost 300 runs in a day... we are accused of taking or replicating one day cricket to tests...

or when 800 or more runs got scored in a day of one day international in india... it is anything but dull cricket at its yawning worst...

these jaundiced eyes suffering from the eye-flue called cricracism refuses to see beyond paleness blocking their 'vision' that this is not the first time it has happened in a test or one day cricket and certainly won't be last irrespective of where it will happen...

but then again... why reason come in way when you can attract cheap eye-balls by practicing racism in the name of cricket and cricket journalism...?

kudos to ipl organisers...

for paving the way for pakistan players to play in ipl...

even after virtual hate campaign led by pcb chairman ijaz butt against bcci and ipl organisers... and usual negative press about not allowing pakistan players to play much sought after ipl and champions league (clt20)... they did not let the criticism deter them...

they not only gave time to pcb to come up with noc from their foreign ministry but also extended the deadline from earlier november 20 to december 9 to give pakistan players every chance to participate in upcoming ipl season... now its upto pcb and relevant authorities to grant them permission...

ipl deserve every bit of praise for this magnanimous move... but as usual media, who is quick to pounce on any opportunity to malign and criticise ipl and its organisers, is keeping mum about it...

if they get time from wiping the egg on their face after spitting venom on papers and alike about how it were ipl organisers who effectively blocked paksitan players and their teams to particulate in ipl as well as champions league... will they render unconditional apology now...?

meanwhile... we welcome paksitan players and look forward to them playing on indian soil...

bcci has come up with, what could be another feather in their cap, corporate trophy... designed in a way that one can be assured of intense competition... which is starting from today...

if the first season of corporate trophy is successful it might give cricketing world ready made template on how to encash moolah even from ailing 50 overs format... yet another first from bcci... must say when it comes to making money... no one can beat them...

one thing which corporate trophy has done even before first ball is bowled for bcci is that it has buried icl so deep that it can't possibly see the light...

yes you read it right... contrary to the perception... rather than the success of ipl season two its the announcement of corporate trophy which speedup the process of mass exodus of indian domestic players from icl... who were looking for just an opportunity to severe ties... and after the announcement of corporate trophy... no corporate house was willing to weaken their side and hence started calling players on their roll playing icl to severe ties with the unofficial league and pet came the bcci announcement of amnesty to icl players... some cooperation that...

this is how seriously corporates are looking at this trophy...

corporate wars will be fought in open rather than in board rooms for spectators delight... what's more it can bring some much needed oxygen to the dying 50 overs format... and at the same time bring sponsors, corporate culture etc to domestic fold...

fringe players will use this as yet another platform to stake claim as the best of indian domestic as well as international players will lock horns to place their hands on coveted trophy...

this is what dilip vengsarkar...former chairman of selectors...said on dravid's recall to team india odi squad...

i share colonel's concern and its really a serious matter if this is the reason...but i would like to ask dilip that during your regime how many players were sent to national cricket academy to rectify this problem...?

rainas, rohits etc, though still considered youngsters but are with team india for quite a while now and its also not that they have suddenly developed the weakness against short balls...so what he exactly did during his tenure as chairman of selectors...?

i am not saying for once that bcci should not be blamed for doing nothing to rectifying the problem of some youngsters may have...but sir its very easy to criticise when you are not part of system anymore...

what about setting some precedence before new selectors who are going to take over from you...?

as i said the responsibility is mutual...the players in question should also take the blame on themselves for the 'chalta hai' attitude and doing nothing to improve their over all game...

if bcci is at fault for doing nothing...so are the players...coz nobody stops them to check into nca and seek professional help for any short comings they think should be addressed...to take their game to next level...

i hope rohit will do exactly that and won't wait forever for bcci to take a call...

but is he willing or just wait for another musical chair game to begin...?

apart from the tight first day at cardiff...what was overwhelming to see that spectators turning in in quite numbers...to re-assure that given the right media hype...right venues...and promise of a competitive cricket...test cricket's days are far from over...

but then there exists boards like bcci too...who is killing the test cricket softly in india...by choosing the wrong venues to play test cricket on...

its not that spectators don't turn up for test matches in india...its also a myth that indian fans are not large hearted cricket fans and can't cheer good cricket by opposition team...

for example...who can forget the standing ovation pak team received in packed chennai stadium after beating india...

where else in world you would see 100,000 spectators roaring and making deafening noises...making lessor mortals to even forget how to handle bat or ball leave alone playing proper cricket...but at the eden of cricket gardens...

its that bcci playing test cricket at wrong venues owing to crappy venue rotation policy...rather than on ones which has tradition of sport loving fans...turning up for a good day of test match...

how i wish them implement this rotation policy, they follow religiously for venues, on some overworked and jaded players specially bowlers...but that's another matter...

they are happy projecting sachin tendulkar raising his bat to empty stadium on achieving never before 12000 runs in test cricket...

they are happy airing empty stadiums while india thrashing world champions at home...as if they don't care about crowd coming in once the tv rights are sold for huge sum of money...

otherwise what can explain that they don't even understand the psyche of their own cricket loving fans...cricketing tradition of their own venues...?

what worse it will impact their inner politics if they fix test venues to say kolkotta, chennai, mumbai and delhi (if its four test series...very little chance they would agree to) and implement the venue rotation policy on odis, t20s, ipls which they play throughout the years...?

this way they will have to compromise the 'vote bank' for only two or three test matches per series and some times not even that...against minimum 7 odis and at least two t20 per series which has become norm of late...and countless ipl games...to compensate for this great 'compromise' they will have to make for saving test cricket in india...

so bcci...is it deal...or am i asking too much...?

IPL-2 is going to happen today…and i must applaud BCCI and Modi for they have gone ahead in organizing it in such a short span of time…

i call it triumph of will…coz it goes to show that rather than sulking on security and other issues…they had the presence of mind to look at adversity as opportunity…so here we are waiting for IPL-2 to start in three weeks flat…

if this is not the triumph of human will than what is…

there is something which is embedded in deep roots in all of us indians that we always…almost unfailingly…will find a way to come out of any situation…and if you are wondering what’s the spirit is…than any indian will tell you that no one virtually no one can beat us in what we call ‘jugaad’…

we have done the same again…and this extravaganza carnival will go ahead with all its razzmatazz...in south africa to melt geographical boundaries that we have created and to conquer even more fans than the previous season…as if it was designed this way originally…

cricket has it in it to pull you to its roots… from wherever you are…wherever you go…

cricket has it in it that will make you ask for ‘score kya hua hai’ (what's score?) … irrespective of the form it is played in…irrespective of situation you are in…

so while the flavor of cricket will be T20 for a while now…i ask you to enjoy it…uninhibitedly…

what the fuss over sachin and dinesh's withdrawal...?

bcci has decided that since himesh marshal who is linked with icl will also be playing in the same match...so sachin and dinesh karthik won't be turning up for master's t20 match...

the stance of bcci viz a viz icl is clear...they have already declared icl as an unofficial league and their policy of not letting their players to play with the teams who have players with icl link is well known either...

earlier they did not let laxman to appear for nottinghamshire for the same reason...

they have always been non-negotiable...they have been clear...and they have been consistent about it...

so what the fuss is all about this time...

just coz the sachin was playing they should relax the stance...?

or the fuss is about how the bcci known for fickle ways has been firm and consistent...?

as usual...a telling statement on 'fussers' from friend soulberry here @ SP...

The fussers are becoming a bit too fussy.

Sachin is in NZ in an official capacity..as is DK...it was a consistent stand by BCCI.

It is time alternative boards were raised in each of the fusser countries and their boards split and later encouraged to patch up...maybe it will teach them a thing or two about fussing.
