most of us are wondering why jaya still plays and more than that why srilanka keeps playing him in spite of his form... are they being too gentle to turn to their hero and say its time sir... or there is something into it...
the answer lies in the dilstructive form of dilSHAAN...
since he is going great guns at one end... srilankans are carrying jayasuriya with the hope that he too will play his characteristic innings here or there if not that consistently... like the innings he played against his favorite team india... in a dress rehearsal before finals of compaq cup... its not hurting srilanka either coz they are still winning more matches than they are losing...
the problem will start for jayasuriya once team will start losing or the form of dilshan dips alarmingly... then srilanka will be forced to take a call on jayasuriya... coz then they won't be able to carry on with two non-performing openers and dropping dilshan for some failures will be akin to cutting your nose for someone else' swine flu... ok ok... bad example... but you get the point...
so jaya... make hey till dilshan shining...
...and when you step in field next time... don't forget to say "thank you dilSHAAN" with one hand on your heart...
the form of one... life line for another...

i would hate to be around when jaya and dilshan get it right in the same game.
Good point on Dilshan Straight. I think the thought process of Jayasuriya works like this:
1. Dilshan is clearly more dangerous and consistent these days. Thus teams plan around him, and that might allow Jayasuriya to sneak in with a quick 40+, and an odd 80 + score (which usually happens when India plays against them :-( )
2. Jayasuriya is old, but lets just say that he's one of the younger 40 year olds around. He still is fairly athletic, and has some power left in those wrists that Ravi Shastri often used to fantasize about while commentating.
3. He also provides a decent 4-5 over bowling option and variety with his ugly left arm spin.
4. Experience.
5. There might be a thinking that the younger players might not be ready yet to take the opening position. If you notice - SL is doing a fairly good job of transitioning its players.
good to see you damit after a while...
yes, we have seen what it can do in that dress rehearsal... but these are occurring way to sparingly... and more than the form the way jaya is getting out is the concern... he just does not seems to come to terms with his falling reflexes...
first welcome here sujith... hope you will keep dropping by...
i agree on most counts that you have already enlisted... as i said in response to damith's... my problem with jaya is not his age... but his failing to understand the dynamics of his body and falling reflexes...
he is still living in wonderlands when he used to clobber bowlers even across the line at square or over it... not his hand eye coordination is just not there that can be seen by his last dismissal... if he can just understand this very point he can still be useful as batsman... according to me... :)
Point taken straight. If Jayasuriya manages his game a little better, it might help SL in the long run. He needn't go for glory. He needs to provide that anchor type role, cut out the risks , and let the other batsmen around him flourish. And with the blink of an eye - he would have contributed a 35+ score more often than not. It's better than getting out cheaply all the time, and getting that 1 big score every 10 games with his old approach.

exactly sujith... :)
They really should get a new opening partner for Dilshan. Sanath still has the ability to be awesome but someone else needs to step in. Otherwise, Dilshan will be left to do all the work with a novice at the other end when Jaya retires.
purna...
i hv heard that some of the hopefuls are planning voluntary retirement after learning that jaya is not going to retire in another decade...
