world cupped...

shared by straight point on Sunday, April 03, 2011

at 31 for 2... with sehwag and sachin back in pavilion... chasing the total never been chased in world cup finals history... the odds were stacked against team india...

india needed to chase that total... it was not only the world champions title that was at stake... but it was whether next gen cricketers had it in them to see team india through from that precarious situation...

and our next-gen did make an emphatic statement...

yes we are ready...

without them performing the way they did... the world champions title would have felt bit hollow... at least to me...

the glorious tribute to sachin was not only the world cup title that was missing from his otherwise illustrious career... but the feeling that yes... the baton has been passed on to right hands... the legacy is being carried forward... that even if when some of the stalwarts will walk into the sunset... they will sleep peacefully... knowing very well that the this team will keep going... to overhaul many more milestones...

and in this light i heard what kohli, who played a crucial role in soothing the nerves in middle, said after the world cup triumph..

"sachin has carried us on his shoulders for 21 years... now its our turn to carry him..."

thank you sachin... thank you gary... thank you team india... thank you for the wonderful game....

well played sri lanka... but we played little better...

As usual Sachin gets the credit even when he does nothing extra-ordinary.

:)

the credit is to whole team and specially next gen cricketers... without them performing the way they did... the win would have been hollow... at least to me...

I agree, however, I still do not understand why Sachin had his son and daughter with him during the victory parade.

its not sachin's fault if other players of team don't have kids... ;)

As a fan I wonder if I can ask anything else of Team India.

just more faith as fan gol... ;)

that's for sure SP. Its Dhoni's team now. Its smarter, cooler and made of steel.

It just felt good to wake up in the morning and know we are champions.

yes... that shot stamped it... and now its dhoni's more than any captain...

but i still feel it was gambhir who owned the finals...

but he (GG) did not stay long enough to sign it...

The only thing left is the test championship. As Gary would say, let's start the process now.

Yes, at 31-2, was worried and switched off. More worried abt Sehwag's wicket than Tendulkars. Gambhir and Dhoni were both instrumental, but I think Dhoni deserved the MoM.
Tendulkar is lucky to have been part of this team.
Cheers!

Well, well, and to think I was so skeptical of India winning this cup. I guess it owes to their performance in the group stages but in the knockouts they really pulled off things the right way.

Sachin getting so much credit- I really don't mind. I mean the poor fellow has waited 21 years for it, I doubt the Indian unit would be what it is right now without him, so he can wallow in all the goodness as much as he wants. :)

And congrats SP, though I am a tad envious. ;)

Congrats to all India fans :)

And dont mind the excessive Sachin tributes, coz "we r like that only...emo-san-al peepul" :)

SP I have always believed that the 96 and 03 Indian teams had it in them to win the cup. But what those team lacked and this team revels in is 'handling pressure'. Dhoni & Co soaks in and absorbs pressure brilliantly. Not just one game but thrice in a row from QF onwards. Raina's contribution in the SF under pressure was immense as was our bowling in the early overs of Finals. Even Sree was relatively economical in his first 3 overs. How well Gambhir and Kohli handled pressure? Dhoni's performance capped it. Just brilliant.

As Ian Chappel often puts it, 'cricket is a game played between the ears'. That's where Sourav stepped up and Dhoni carried on. I am sure future Indian teams will be tough mentally and would deliver strong performances.

Credit to Dhoni and his men. Thank you guys.

did you say gambhir did not stay long enough gol...? he stayed there at the crease for 3 hrs!! saw india to safety from that position when many dint believe india can pull it off...

this is one killer but true statement vm... but at the same time i truly believe that if all the team mates wants to dedicate the win to the stalwart... who we are to stop them...? we don't even have an idea what happens behind the doors... no...?

why envious sunny...?

our team made gary kirsten the first south african to win a world cup... hope after reading this you will think again... ;)

straight point said...

indeed megha... its best to ignore...

but what anyone wont be able to ignore for at least next four years is... we are the undisputed world champions!!! :)

straight point said...

yes bala... think i heard dhoni saying we converted pressure into added responsibility... and that surely is one helluva way to look at it...

if you want to be the world champions you ought to knockout tough opponents and this is exactly what this team did... and how...
