my mom is smarter than boycott's mom...

shared by straight point on Monday, March 14, 2011

sometimes it just takes a simple question to force you see light... bring some much needed perspective...

after the match against south africa... another tsunami has struck india... it is called 'why dhoni opted to bowl nehra...?'

you walk around park... only to find self appointed postmortem surgeons making reports on india's chances at the world cup...

you switch any channel and the question was forced on to your throat like salesman hard-sells knowing he is getting short on monthly target...

frustrated by what was going on... my mom simply asked me...

didn't we win the t20 world cup when joginder sharma bowled last over...?

did anyone criticise dhoni then...?

here's how i am looking at it. Which team who loses 9 wickets for 29 runs (which was admittedly freakish) has the ability to take a game in the last over and almost win it

gol... i truly believe... from fans we are fast turning into venture capitalists... only interested in results...

Turning VC! :-) Like the analogy. The problem lies in the weakness in overall bowling. I don't see the need for a medium pacer in a team, unless he is an allrounder. That is the problem area. It's easy to blame the last over alone, but honestly, the fix for the problem is bigger. I don't know if it's even possible. Sreesant needs to play. Antics aside, he is a pace bowler. Ashwin needs to get a game. India hasn't even tried different combinations.

SP,

I agree with both you and VM; my problem is not the "low" score per se (yes the batsmen should not have gone for glamour shots but still a good score) or the last over to Nehra.
The only thing that bothers me is why 3 pacers to begin with?? And that too when 2 of them are not strike bowlers.
My combo would have been Zak, Sree, Bhajji and Ashwin.

SP,

Even though I would have preferred Bhajji, I don't have a problem with Nehra. MSD knows his men better than we do, so don't doubt that decision. Plus the first four had some element of luck.

But, you can't expect general audience to not complain. On twitter only, they change from worshipers to critics in matter of minutes. So, don't be surprised to find more and more people complaining.

@Leela - Sreesanth in your final XI ?? I would go for Munaf, Zaheer, Bhajji and Ashwin. Also, choosing 3 pacers didn't seem like a wrong call because the pitch wasn't exactly a turner. It had good carry, so 3 pacers on that track, not a bad call.

Freehit,

Well, yes for that match, I would've expected Sree because he can generate that pace, and he can take wickets.

For the WI match, I think I am OK with Zak, Munaf, Ashwin and Bhajji.

I am surprised so many people actually love Munaf Patel. Twice in two tough matches, he has let the team down with length balls to tail-enders.

His fielding alone can yield about 5 - 15 runs for the opponents.

And he has gone above 7 against good batting line ups. Sreesanth at least gets early wickets, provided the catches are taken.

Really surprising. I prefer Nehra over Munaf even after that last over.

There isn't faulting the choice of Nehra to bowl last over. He was unlucky with the first ball. It could have ended Peterson with some luck for Ashish. After that it was just length bowling by an upset bowler.

Bhajji has never really bowled in tight situations. He chickened out during the T-20 Final and that is how Jogindar came into pictureBut what people have forgotten is, Irfan Pathan and RP Singh bowled beautifully to save something for the last over there !

good to see you after a long time...

i agree that india have been quite stubborn to explore its bowling resources... they could have easily done it at the league stage itself... now they have more or less managed to push themselves into a position where they would have to win against windies to be 100% sure...

straight point said...

leela... the combos are where things become highly subjective... say if for you sree is better choice that cant be as feasible for other...

however, my only disappointment as i said is, i do believe that india could have been little more proactive in exploring its bowling resources... going into last league match...

mayank... that is exactly why i call most of them VCs not fans... :)

doc that is a good observation regarding munaf... his strength becomes his weakness in death overs and that is why, i think, team india wants to play 3 seamers... and trust nehra to partner zak in stemming the rot...

SP, the important question is, is your mom a better cricketer than Boycott's mom?

After all, from what I've heard over the years she was the greatest cricketer in the world.

Hi Pankaj,

I’m writing on behalf of the Managing Editor of CricketCountry, which is a joint venture portal of the Zee Group and an American media giant. Our cricket vertical has lots of cricketers writing for us, besides established writers. However, we are also giving space for bloggers and others who would like to share their views and/or blog on cricket.

Would you be interested in posting your cartoons/articles on our website? If you do wish to share, kindly let me know. We are not paying fan bloggers for non-exclusive articles, but what we would undoubtedly give them is instant recognition on a big platform alongside big names. Moreover, we intend leverage the written stuff across social media platforms. And that means getting your writings across to much bigger audience and
thus getting new readers to your blog – if you are a blogger.

If we find that any blogger is writing insightfully and is drawing a huge following, we could then commission him/her to write exclusive articles for which they would be paid.

Do let me know your thoughts.
