why blame ishant... or even bhajji for that matter...?

shared by straight point on Friday, October 01, 2010

once there was poet summit (kavi-sammelan) going on... and this poet was reciting one of the most boring poems one can come across, one after another, saw this man who was frowning back and forth across the stage with a long bulky stick in hand and looking really angry... obviously this poet got worried of his safety and asked this person if everything is ok...? shall i stop...?

this person said "nah... you are our guest... please carry on... i am looking for the guy who called you..."

now you would wonder what this joke has anything to do with cricket... and specially ishant and bhajji for that matter... but give me a minute...

ishant was getting lots of flak for his no balls and wayward bowling... and even now one can read it in at the end of day's 'analysis'... but should ishant be really be blamed for that...?

for quite some time now it is getting increasingly clear that ishant is not only declining as bowler but his fitness is going down even more alarmingly as if there is competition between his skills and his body that who will give in first... and yet our wise men at helm keep in selecting him in the squad and our team think tank in the final xi...

do they sleep when ishant bowls at net...?

for, i am sure, this problem of over stepping... him spraying balls everywhere but on spot he needs to land on can be easily noticed when he is bowling in the nets... but still he continues to find a place in final xi instead of playing and rectifying it in at domestic games... given the long season we have ahead...?

same goes with bhajji... he has become the butt of joke and i am not even trying to defending him here coz with his 'consistent' bowling performances he has become indefensible... but what can bhajji do when team management is hell bent on picking him to play even when he was ill (in sri lanka) or not even half fit here at mohali...?

i am sure you got the joke now...

Ya, the joke is quite relevant to Cricketing Myopia of selectors. I think, the Nagesh Kuknoor movie had the selection system in country's cricket quite unambiguously.

thanks ab... but i would put blame on not only our five wise men... but also at our team think tank...

i mean what they were/are thinking...?

@straightpoint---------->>On this point, I always admire Aussies; they don't pick a half fit player. And they have logic to it.

To Ishant's credit he did show some improvement in SL. Personally I would have preferred Sreesanth. On a track like this, Mithun may have come in handy what with his off cutters, coming in even more slowly.

yes ab... at least they seems to be very clear about it...

mithun?

you must be joking bala... what would have happened to the star power appeal our team management so hell bent on and even corporates don't mind...? ;D

I guess the appeal to pick Ishant and Bhajji was partly due to the fact that the oppositions are Australia and Ponting (their favourite bunny) is the captain...

We set too much store by the past records despite reiterating before every match that it's a new day, new match, fresh start, blah blah blah...

We can and should blame Ishant and Harbhajan because they have the option of ruling themselves out if they're not fit and/or are struggling. It takes a really undisciplined bowler to overstep time and again the way Ishant does. This isn't a problem he's developed overnight and the onus is on him to do whatever is needed to correct it. He's not a bloody 10-year old who doesn't know where the crease is. He has the option of going back to domestic cricket or the NCA to work on his mechanics and his fitness but will he exercise it? He's an adult and you can't expect the management to make his decisions for him. Ditto for Harbhajan whose bowling is as incisive as his ridiculous sound bytes.

The argument about his bowling in nets is quite speculative. We don't see how he bowls in the nets so we can't really say. If the comments of the former bowling coach Venkatesh Prasad are anything to go by, Ishant actually works really hard in the nets.

shri... so next time we play WI we should pick gavaskar and if he don't perform to our expectations we should bitch him... ;D

jokes apart... if past performances are pointers than what about current performances...?

i have to admit that we both live in separate world mahek... you live in ideal world where players take time out if they are not at top of their games...

but i live i world where vvs laxman... dravids etc have still not retired from odi... means they are 'available'... dravid when forced onto odi squad recently does not call the farce by announcing that he is not available...

i live in world where lots at stake where hiding injury to play is not a new and unheard of phenomenon...

i live in world where players refuses to walk for they feel what are umpires there for...?

and finally i live in world where there are reasons to believe that if a particular bowler is bowling lots of no balls in match he must be doing the same (if not more) at nets...

so sorry... we can never agree... :)

Bhajji provides Batting cover - do you have a spinner who can bowl half as well as him and bat as well as him ;-)
(Without Durby's steely batting, could India have won the Mohali match? Eh?)
