in defence of yuvraj singh...

shared by straight point on Tuesday, June 08, 2010

so finally yuvraj singh got dropped from team india... and the best part is selectors are either being hailed or at least not questioned why he was dropped...

the reason given (although not given but assumed) that yuvraj had the most disastrous season of his career and his fitness level too dropped to alarming level so there was no option left to selectors but to drop him from the team...

but scratch beneth the surface and you will find many disparities with this assumption...

if yuvraj is dropped for his fitness... then why there are still some players in the team selected for asia cup who are as fat as yuvraj and are more drag in field than him even at his current fitness level...?

so is he dropped from the team coz of his batting failures...?!

in year 2009 he averaged about 39 with bat apart from taking 14 crucial wickets and in 2010 he averages 24 but he has played only 5 odis during this period... certainly not the numbers to drop a proven match winner coz i have seen lesser skilled player with even lesser numbers to keep getting the ticket...

yuvraj is a classical example of mixing chalk with cheese... coz he is dropped from the one day team for his batting form in t20 cricket...!

if the rules cannot be applied clearly and uniformly then why pick him only...?

SP, while i empathise with your feelings towards this drop and logic behind this, I don't disagree with the result. I had commented elsewhere about how Yuvi needs to go back to Ranji. It has only done good - except for Kaif perhaps - that is a different story all togather. Should we be worried that Kaif and Yuvi are of the same generation ?

Selectors have acted just like you expect them to. The chance of guessing that was 100%.

Good article SP,I totally agree with you.People and media must stop talking about his waist and look at the talent that he has.
When a player of this talent gets booted out due to trail by the media,it is not fair.It happened to him in tests in Australia when Anil Kumble was captain. It is very disappointing.I wish he comes back with a big bang and that is when I would like to talk to people who can only criticize.
Cheers,

SP, the problem with Yuvraj is not with his numbers... it's something much more...

Each player is selected to the team with a role in mind... And this includes the role that he is expected to play in the World Cup 2011...

Yuvraj has the role of being a middle order match winner and an athletic fielder... he has been dropped since he is losing th plot... he has not played a real significant innings since the Champions Trophy last year and his fielding's been BAD... what's worse been is his attitude with respect to stuff like diving, getting his body in line, chasing balls and just routine movement on the field...

True, there are other players in the team who just as bad as Yuvraj is right now... but dropping Yuvraj NOW is necessary as he has the ability to come back a lot stronger when the World Cup arrives...

i hv been advocating for him being 'rested' for a while now... but, as you said, selectors did it coz there was lot of negativity about him rather than on logic...

thanks mayank...

i am not much disappointed by the end result as such... its the mean with which it is done made me write what i wrote...

in a way its good that he is away from the daily scrutiny for a while now which will give him time think about his approach towards game...

shridhar fielding is not a role... its as important as your first skill and it is for every player in the team not for specific player...

as for its fitness i bet you if he is made to run now even with his dodgy knee and tyre around his waist he will beat bhajji, zak, nehra, sehwag etc anyday...

SP, i have posted a couple of blogs on http://cricsis.blogspot.com/ on this issue...

I know that there are bound to be differing opinions on the Yuvraj issue... but I still feel that this was needed now... it could have long term benefits for the team...

shri... i have always believed difference of opinion is the mother of all debates provided it does not gets personal... so its good only that we differ...

thanks for leaving the link i have commented there... :)

straight, got to disagree with you on this one.
Yuvraj needed a tough message and this is the right time. Infact, I'd just let him get angry and get his act together and bring him just back in time for World Cup - he should play the world cup with a point to prove- that is the Yuvraj we want.
What I am sure is that he is going to go through phases in career when that anger drives him to excel for a short period followed by lethargic periods where he under performs.
Our smartness lies in making his point-to-prove period coincide with the world cup :-)

raj, i really do hope that our selectors have put in as much thought in dropping Yuvraj as you have...

raj... i am not sure if a player can be manipulated like that... and you wanna hang a point-to-prove sword on already a proven match winner... it can be very edgy...

but i agree and as i have said earlier in comments that this free time may well make him think about his game and his approach towards it...

i am glad that they are not thinking this way shri... :)
