cricket australia owes me some beer...

shared by straight point on Friday, June 11, 2010

cricket australia has confirmed that they, from next summer onwards, will try out split-innings one day games in their domestic cricket... but it won't be two t20 games played back to back...

"One of the things that's come back as the feedback from fans and also from a television audience perspective is that by having a split innings, after the dinner break, no matter, you will get to see both teams bat in the evening. That is something that people who might be going to the game after work or coming home after work see as being a very significant plus for this format."

well here at sp... i did a post on september 2009 proposing exactly the same... how splitting odi innings can work... this is what i proposed then...

so if teamA scores say 180/5 in first 25 overs... the innings should be called off automatically and the opposition teamB steps in and if say they score160/4 after their first innings of 25 overs the teamA should resume their innings from 180/5 score onwards...

needless to say my vote goes for this trial... rather than left to die slow death if not dead already... one day cricket needs some innovations very urgently for if not for this format many boards would have closed the shop many moons ago...

Now that explains why I insist we bloggers need to copyright our stuff. Rather low of them.

Seriously, man - get in line. Cricket Australia owes a lot of us a beer (if only for all the drama caused by their insistence on keep Andrew Fucking Hilditch as chairman of selectors).

Maybe a carton's on it way! Looks like they've read you!

If I recall correctly, I might have been cold to the idea back then. Not sure still, if I prefer a split ODI to two T20s to fill my evening slot.

sb... if played in two innings rather than two back to back t20 games the idea does has potential to be interesting... lets see how it develops...

Thanks Straight Point - have also blogrolled you.

The reason I disagreed then and perhaps still look at the idea suspiciously is that the split innings creates a feel too close to T20s. 50-50 was distinct from 20-20 and tests...in the split form it is neither.

Will it be a hyper-comressed mini-test match? Sounds that way.

Frankly see no point in a change of innings for what is supposed to be a short game...a one-day game. In fact now we make it a little longer!

If overs are chopped off, then as good as having 2 T20s on the same evening.

If rain intervenes, the sense of inclompleteness is only heightened.

If the world of cricket is finding 50-50 taxing to run, then might be better give it up rather than force changes.

Now we are one more step closer to baseball actually...change of innings and all that and having a cumulative score. More than T20...where it is only the trappings and duration which are similar... this format is based closer on baseball.

But it might catch on...who knows? If majority watching public accepts it then it will natuarlly be the right way forward.

i look it this way sb...

when t20, a compressed version of odi, is working and clicking well... then why not have a compressed tests in the form of spilt odi and see how it goes and taken...

if we go about it open minded and dont jump the gun... rest details of rain interwals etc can be ironed out at domestic cricket before it shows its new face at international level...
