(The race to become no.1)

shared by Kinka on Tuesday, January 06, 2009

The facts can change depending upon circumstances

The race to become no. 1

australia has been the champion team for quite some time. during this period other team had no hope but to struggle for 2nd 3rd or even fourth spot...many team would dream to become no. 1 but only see themselves to slip in ranking further...

but not the scene is bit different...there was time when every player in playing oz eleven was contributing now only 1-2 player seem to contribute...india started the slump by defeating australia and now south africa is doing good job down under to remove them from no. 1 position...officially...

this certainly has raised the interest of common cricket fan in terms of who will become no. 1 which is very good for test cricket...

its really seems a possibility that india, the way they are playing, too can become no. 1 but if you closely follow the no. of test matches india going to play (see the above table)...its clear the india will take some time to be no. 1 in test cricket...not for her performance though...but coz of sheer ignorance of BCCI towards test cricket...

its quite clear that while australia will be playing 16 tests in year 2009...india will be playing only 6 matches...then how we can improve on our rating by playing much less?

we don't often play with teams like bangladesh, west indies, new zealand (which are considered relatively weaker teams) and i feel that it helped australia immensely coz they played with weaker teams more regularly than us...why can't we play with them even more?

if we get to play more test matches like australia or south africa...don't you think we too can become no. 1?

Dear Ranjeet,

great observation Kinka...but should the BCCI be expected to see beyond IPL $$$$ and suchlike to think about irrelevant stuff like scheduling more test matches?

Kinka, don't be surprised if the No.1 bug gets to them, and they hit a few more 6s. Before u know, there'll be 6X6 test matches.
FTP, what FTP?

This is pathetic. Aren't they talking abt a SL series though?

I am surprised India doesn't have many match bookings given its financial clout. I would also expect if and when India get closer to #1, more people will want to have series with them.

India needs to improve on fitness if it wants to be #1 because the workload is being increased. Zaheer and Ishant are quality but don't bowl that much compared to other spearhead quicks. Guys like Johnson and Lee are a lot fitter and are still fast late in the day.

What will happen if they go overseas and Harbhajan averages 45+? Zaheer and Ishant will need to bowl more... will they use three quicks or Mishra?

Behind Ishant and Zaheer there is quite a gap. India's bowling attack doesn't seem to have much on the bench

haha NC...

yes they can do anything bt right now for them FTP means Forget Test Program...

excellent point YM...

though we want them to play more test matches...we should also see that are they fit enough for that work load...which i don't think they are...

they have denied this as 'rumors' leela :)

Thanks Megha. But still, i think ICC ranking is more important than IPL.

This is disappointing... in 2008, India came a very close second in the list of teams playing the most number of test matches in a year and then this, 2009 FTP is a disappointing shocker.

Now the question is, whether the tour of Pakistan is included here in this measly test itinerary... Else, it will be something like 3 matches in an entire year.

dear scorpicity,
agree with you. its really a matter of disaapointment that we would play only 6 matches in this year. I don't know how BCCI have chalked out the programme.

Perhaps we will play with West Indies in another series.

The BCCI can get things organised if they want to. Look at IPL.

'if bcci want to' is the operative phrase here YM... :)

Is it just about the BCCI? Australia regularly go from years of six Tests and 19, with a few reasonable ones in between, just because it's really hard to schedule Test Series when your season overlaps with everyone else. The Ashes are the easy one, and a few Top End series with minnows help a bit, but they're not going to waste a bigger series on Darwin.

Sure, the BCCI is a bit focussed on IPL, and the season seems a bit more flexible than down here, but even they haven't got it as easy as England.

straight point said...

even then jon..just six test in a year when you have publically announced that they wanna become no.1 by 2010...?

Jonathan said...

Sorry... I was overestimating a bit! In 2007, Australia played four Tests. Yes four. (It was the World Cup year, but still. They might still have more of a lead on the table now if it had been a more normal year, but they don't deserve that anyway.)

As for the BCCI's planning, isn't the tour planning done some time in advance? Now they've added an extra Test to the NZ series, but I'm not sure that Tests at the expense of tour matches is a great way to boost your ranking...
