IPL - The Dream Merchant

shared by straight point on Tuesday, April 22, 2008

you are talking about IPL and posting the image of ICL Head Kapil Dev!!

what the hell!! you would say...

Guys have a look at the snap again its the person shaking hand with Kapil, i am talking about...

his name is...Dinesh Salunkhe (who??)

well his story goes like this...courtesy www.andhranews.net

Life for Dinesh Salunke took a very interesting turn in Dec 2006 when he got selected to be a part of the Cricket Star Academy. From then onwards he started living his dream of learning from and rubbing shoulders with some of the best in the Cricket fraternity - Kapil Dev, Sanjay Manjerakar, Geoffery Boycott, Monty Panesr, Waqar Younis and then being chosen the 'Man of Series' of first ever cricket talent hunt and reality show, Cricket Star,. Dinesh Salunkhe has just returned to Mumbai on Wednesday, 19th September 2007,after spending the English summet training and coaching with Leicestershire County Cricket Club. The Chembur resident played for Little Thorpe and Narbourough club at Leicester. Dinesh played 8 matches in which he scored 287 runs and took 28 wickets. Salunkhe got an opportunity to meet English pace man Sajid Mahmood. Robin Singh and Romesh Powar, who were a part of the Indian Team that was in England recently, met this Mumbai lad and appreciated his performance at Leicester. Salunkhe, the leg spinner and an all rounder found out how tough it is to turn the ball in England. But Salunkhe learned a few things in a very short span and adjusted to the tough climatic conditions in England.

Salunkhe, who was offered scholarship by former Indian Captain and legendary Kapil Dev, and a contract with Air India had left for UK on July 14 after being nominated as the Man of the Series of the first ever Cricket realty show Cricket Star I, that was aired in April this year.
regulars of this blogs will remember my first post on IPL... in which i talked about how IPL will be realizing unfulfilled dreams of so many players who otherwise would not have thought possible even in their wildest dreams!

add Dinesh Salunkhe to the list...and i am sure he wont be last...

from nobody to bowling alongside with legendary shane warne in yesterdays match...is the kinda fairytale script even our bollywood is yet to come up with...

PS: after revisiting Dinesh story, i found out that there is definite link between IPL & ICL...apart from ICL Head Kapil Dev financing his scholarship...if my memory serves me right that 'Cricket Star' show was aired on Zee Sports an enterprise of Subhash Chandra the brain behind ICL...hmmm...are we into something... ;-))

Hope he didn't hang out much with Saj Mahmood. If SM goes @6 rpo in tests, what will his t20 rate be?
One helluva story there, sp.

Brilliant.

I recognized Salunkhe when I saw the pic and at first I thought the reg logo on the shirt was the ICL one and in my mind ran a story of how the IPL had poached an ICL signee.

After reading the article I looked at the logo closely and it was that of Cricket Star. I heard he had won the reality show during the commentary of the match.

Thanks for the detailed story SP. It was indeed a dream come true for the young leggie.

Did u see his reaction after the wicket of Jayawardene?

Brilliant story SP. Wasn't aware of the show that u are talking about. But u r right in pointing out that apart from the money and the stars.. whats amazing about the T20 leagues is the oppurtunity they are providing for so many youngsters.

For us, the almighty fans, it's not IPL/ICL/BPL/HPCL..it's only cricket and we would lap up whichever served up quality stuff. I would say IPL is yet to match the second ICL final, which was decided via bowlout. Why this discrimination? You can ignore someone who has aligned with ICL but who on earth allows you to ban a player?

thanks Six!!

Western Media would not want to promote this aspect of ICL/IPL. Its not their players who are getting promoted. I mean its only the local players from India who are getting a chance in the world stage. I guess its the job of Indian media to do something.

Anil Singh said...

you are right when you say, IPL and ICL will accomodate numerous such player, who in their absence would have gone to oblivion.
Nice post Mate!
Australian influence mate!
again ?!
anyway, nice post mate!
Never mind

straight point said...

Tri...

even their player are getting international exposure by rubbing shoulders with stars/legends of cricket which otherwise they would only dream of...so its not that only our players are getting the benefit...its another matter they are deliberately closing their eyes on this fact...

straight point said...

bisht

warm welcome and thanks for your comments... :)

please care to elaborate more on Australian influence...

SP,
The overseas players who are playing here are all well known in their respective countries. But thats not the case with the Indian local players. The overseas players might not play for the international team. But thats a different case.

straight point said...

you mean player like Ronchi, Dominic Thornely etc are popular oz players?

Trideep said...

I am not sure. But if they were not, why would they have been selected for IPL. They must be good enough there.

straight point said...

the same applies for our domestic players. isnt it?

Trideep said...

Local players have also been taken to make up the numbers. I agree that they are the best of the lot. But yet they are there because u need 7 Local players in each team. If IPL had been played in any other country, so many Indian players wouldn't have been selected.

I played with Dinesh during his time in England at Narborough & Littlethorpe CC . 5 of his 26 wickes were caught or stumped by me. I found him to be not only an exellent cricketer but a great person too, he was only here for half a season but his mermory will live on for a long time. Ive kept up with dinesh's acheivments since he left England, and was delighted for him when he signed for rajistan Royals in the IPL and it was great seeing him play with top international stars. It couldnt happen to a nicer person in my opinion, and I belive Dinesh deserves all that he acheves in cricket
