why runner for batsman...?

shared by straight point on Wednesday, June 01, 2011

since the icc cricket committee has come up with horse loads of recommendations... not allowing the runner to an injured batsman has been the most argued point on twitter and elsewhere...

the most common reason given against discrimination of providing batsman a runner is... even bowlers get injured but an injured batsman is allowed to keep batting with a runner...

now visualise this scenario...

a runner is allowed to finish run-up for an injured bowler...

the absurdity of above visual is enough to give you clue why an injured batsman is allowed a runner... amongst other sane reasons...

1. running is only a part of the skill requirements for a batsman
2. It is an independent enough sub-function of batting and thus can be outsourced

The task of bowling cannot be broken into subtasks.

bet you to come up with sane ones... :)

still there are some who wants to make cricket a football... and feel proud of their 'knowledge' of both sports...

Not exactly sure what you are referring to with football skills.

If you can elaborate we can debate the runner thing better

It's over exploited but damn useful and sensible in so many cases.

Trust the ICC to set the bar lower every time they meet!

well the bowler already has support of 10 other players in the field so allowing 1 runner for a batsman is pretty much justified!!!!

if only some of the more knowledgeable persons over here know this simple fact vaibhav...

welcome at sp.. hope you will keep dropping by...

denying runner to batsmen is akin to saying bowler would be allowed wickets only of bowled and lbws... :)

SP, allowing a runner to a tiring batsman allows him to regroup and often demolish opposition like how Saeed Anwar did to India during his epic 194.

There should be strict guidelines to allow a runner. An injury acquired during a match is understandable. But if a batsman manages to carry an old injury and takes a runner frequently, that is unfair. Laxman did that during the series against Australia. That was not completely fair.

I do believe runner should be allowed for that is what makes Cricket so special and a different kind of a team game. But the rules should be stringent.

Most of the batsmen, like Sachin don't like runners.

I don't see why batsmen can't have a runner - would be a shame for the match if they couldn't play at all!
