why duncan fletcher...?

shared by straight point on Wednesday, April 27, 2011

now that the news of duncan fletcher has started to sink in... i started to wonder whether fletcher was the only realistic candidate to coach team india left with as the reports filtering out wants me to believe...?

the template of team india coach was more or less set by gary kirsten...

a coach that has a formidable record... a fierce competitor but not on your face kinda competitor... a trier who will keep coming at you... likes only his work do the talking... likes to remain in background... allergic to media... should have seen the game from close quarters to understand and know the demands of modern game... the more recent one the better...

duncan fletcher meets some of the requirements but if only india not kept its eyes set obsessively on foreign shores it could have easily found the man that fits the above template to the T...

anil kumble...

the man is one of the best match winner india has produced... a fierce competitor but never crossed the line... genuinely respected in cricketing circles... one of the architect of team india being numero uno... knows all players inside out... specially could have been the guiding influence on young players hence could have handled the imminent transition phase more aptly than the most... never runs to talk to media but when he does cricket world listens...

contrary to many beliefs... "only one team was playing with the spirit of game" statement kumble made did more in capturing the gravity of the sydney-gate... made them rise from the slumber to act than the so called arm twisting methods of bcci...

has seen the game evolved from as close quarters as one could get... and most importantly knows exactly where the heart and mind is... of himself and that of indian cricket...

but as i said if only bcci and team think tank were bit more flexible and not obsessed with looking over the shoulder...

Hi SP,

Kumble of course would be a good choice but I am not sure Kumble was interested, hasn't he decided to do a career for a position of power in the BCCI?

I think he is tackling the Indian Cricket administration and that in my opinion might be something where we need people like Kumble to participate in.

Agree with Keshto on the point of Kumble as a coach. Unsure about Duncan Fletcher, maybe MSD can teach an old dog new tricks?

hi Keshto...

i wrote the post in response to the reports that fletcher was the only realistic candidate left...

do you really believe kumble would have forwarded his candidature...? but more important question here is was he approached by bcci or team think tank...?

the most important facet of indian coach is the ability to cope with the schedule team india has... and considering flethcers age i doubt whether 63 year old body could cope with such extensive travel...

on kumble... i wonder whether he was even thought of as possible candidate...

The question also regarding Kumble is : Is he available? I am just not sure he is.

And I think his ambition to get into the BCCI will be a lot more useful than him being the Indian coach.

Of course if he was available, I agree he might not have been considered. Although I have seen his name circulate with the name of Ganguly on some forum.

keshto... he wouldn't be that old after say 4 years stint as coach...

also is it a rule that the one who did his service as indian team coach can't later be a bcci official...? :)

True but he was recently elected wasn't he for the Karnataka Board? So it wouldn't be serious to get elected and drop your responsibilities on the first occasion.

Duncan Fletcher (0 career Tests) to coach the best Test team in the world. Staggeringly uninspiring choice. This appointment benefits Fletcher more than it benefits India. I will be happy to be proved wrong.

As for Anil. I hope he was at least approached.

Lots of misgivings about this. I would have given Robin Singh a chance. Successes with Mumbai and as fielding coach for India and I believe he s played a couple of tests too.
As long as he doesnt do a GregC, I ll be happy. Even if all he does is sit with the laptop like Buchanan, I think MSD s good enough to look after the team.

not saying its not valid point you are raising keshto...

its just that i believe had he been approached... or was he even been thought to approach...

we all will be happy to be proven wring gol... :)

regarding kumble... i can't see a better man to do job than him but only problem with this theory seems to be that after kapil saga... it is an unwritten law that no indian will be considered for team india coach i guess...

i call him robbing singh and for good reason... :)

regarding your point about msd... i totally agree with you... the most important job is in right hand and it wont be easy to take him for ride as gchappel did with dravid...

That was as straight as you ever have been. Anil Kumble for Coach. I had earlier rooted for Anil Kumble for President. Not BCCI but I that is India.

May be he should be ready in 2 years time. May be Fletcher is an Interim Coach !

Coming to the man himself, Duncan will be Fletcher on Stretcher Coach for India. He doesn't look goof at all !

Fletcher on Stretcher...

hahaha... very visual doc...

My ask is, why point a finger to Fletcher ? ? ?
Do we expect that Duncan Fletcher go out & perform for the players ?? I also fail to realise, when the Indian team pulled off a couple of victories, Fletchers name was never mentioned. So why now ? ? ? Is it the Blame game !!! or just a fault finding act. !

before ranting on me about fletcher... little more attention to the date and content of the post would have made you realise this post is not about what you commented... its about the candidature of flether WHEN he was appointed as team india coach..
