dhoni's message is loud and clear...

shared by straight point on Tuesday, February 15, 2011

if piyush chawla was looking at dhoni with some positive intent after his match winning performance in the warm-up match against australia... dhoni was quick to dispel that in no uncertain terms...

"Well, he has done really well in whatever games he has played. But I think he needs to contribute with the bat. One of the main reasons for his selection was our need to have a specialist spinner who could also bat a bit. If he could bat a bit better and contribute 15-20 runs then it would be good for the side. But as a specialist spinner he has done well in whatever games he has played," Dhoni said.

what dhoni is trying to say is that he don't need a 'specialist bowler' who will take four wickets in successfully defending 200 odd runs...

but what he needs is a 'specialist bowler' who can contribute with 15-20 odd runs with bat and if, in doing so, he doesn't take 4 odd wickets in defending a small total is cool with him...

and we blamed bhajji for going defensive all this while...

chawla... now you exactly know what you have to do in next warm-up game against new zealand...

not with the ball you stupid...

Good One.. What about the wicket keeper? A specialist wicket keeper who can make a decent score or an ordinary keeper who always rely on others perormance and making stupid comments like this???

I read it differently when I first saw it - Dhoni appears to be raising the bar for Chawla instead of exchanging a bit of bowling for batting.

I felt he was trying to say he's been bowling well and needs to do an additional bit with his bat. Perhaps because both Chawla and Dhoni might have envisioned Piyush to be an all rounder in the Vettori mould.

My eyebrows twitched though upon the glibness in that statement that Chawla had bowled 'well' in 'every' chance he had been given.

welcome shameem at sp... hope you will keep dropping by...

dhoni's fear seems to be coming from the dead middle order... we have yuvi, raina and dhoni himself not contributing much and specially while chasing even a decent total they don't inspire much confidence if our top order does not fire...

hence he is looking for more avenues of runs instead of appreciating a bowler's performance who had taken 4 wickets in the match which is almost equivalent to batsman making a ton in odi...

i agree sb where you are coming from...

if that was the case this press statement should have come explaining WC selection before the warm-up match... and that would be ok...

his statement coming in wake of a match turning performance from a bowler there by escaping them lots hoopls about team's what would have been a very dismal performance is touch rich and unwarranted in my eye...

SP,

Dhoni's statement left me bemused.

To me Dhoni is trying to make the case for not picking Chawla in the future

And he came up with a rather foolish one.

gol... did you also wonder why chawla wasn't allowed to take take 5 wickets in first place...? ;)

Golandaaz said...

no, i did not watch the whole game, just the last 4 wickets.

But on that one, I am willing to concede that Dhoni wanted to give other bowlers a practice and in ODIs a 4 W game is as good as 5 wicket one

straight point said...

the way wickets were falling in heap at that time... there was not much chance of bowling practice anyways... :)

although i agree 4 wickets were as good as 5 but five wicket haul will always create more buzz in the media to dismiss the way dhoni dismissed it...

I think you are right

Dhoni seems to have made up his mind that Chawla is not in the XI and once he saw him take those wickets he came up with a reason to not include Chawla out of his a$$

Shameem said...

Is Dhoni trying to defend Ashwin's inclusion in world cup XI? It's like Dhoni try to prove a point that 'hey, we have Ashwin he batted bit in warm up game'

I agree with Soulberry here. Chawla didn't bother the scorers and his attempted drive was airy at best. He didn't exactly value his wicket the way Ashwin & Nehra did. If I were to read more into the comments, I think Chawla may actually have (dare-I-say) disobeyed the captain/coach's instructions while batting. This was a warm-up game and it was probably meant to figure out the combinations and execute certain plans. Not find heroes.

I almost fell down from my chair when I read Dhoni's statement. And that is what inspired me to do this...

Weird are the ways with our Captains.

shameem it could be the case... but why would we want to play two off spinners when we have chawla to provide a good dash of variety...?

what heroes...? you mean to say he should not have got 4 wickets as it will held against him as a heroic case...?

i may be old fashioned by 'executing certain plans' by 'specialist bowlers' should always be taking bunch wickets of wickets... no...?

i hope you are now back to on your chair govind... ;D

thanks for dropping in the link... i will check it out there...

SP - Honestly, I'm simply speculating, but I don't see Dhoni being as clueless as Gol and you are making him sound. He honestly shared his view that Chawla was selected for his ability to chip in and that he needed to do that. I didn't see him trash his bowling ability at all. Would we all have asked Chawla to score a few more runs if he took only 2 wickets? Is he going to take 4 wickets every game he plays? Dhoni didn't find what the team was seeking. A bowler who could bat a bit.

straight point said...

we all are speculating vidoo... :)

the ask of 15-20 runs from a specialist bowler who is not going to bat above no.8 is the admission of a) not much faith in seven batsmen b) unnecessary pressure on bowler to come good with bat too...

here is not hoping that chawla would get him 15-20 runs... he want 15-20 runs which is big difference...

if i were chawla this thing will certainly play in my mind specially if i have batted first and not scored as much...
