first thoughts after seeing abdul razzaq's blistering innings...

shared by straight point on Monday, November 01, 2010

i could not see the innings live at first place... actually to be precise could not commit myself to see another pak vs sa match... its only when friend and fellow bored member, gaurav of naked cricket pinged me how he razzaqed sa, i realised what i missed...

but this post is not about adding my two cents in appreciation of razzaq's innings... this is already done by naked cricket on bored which i can't better...

the first thought that flashed in mind, after seeing razzaq's innings, was how dearly india would love to have the kind of game breaker at no.7... like abdul bhai...

few regulars of this blog would recall i advocated robin uthappa's candidature for the no.7 position for the same reason... and more i watched razzaq's innings, knowing fate, more i get convinced that uthappa is just the type of player to do it for us and lamented how selectors missed the golden opportunity to try him out during the recent oz series... not that they can't try it now against new zealand... its still worth to take a chance...

its no rocket science now that at no.7 india needs a player who can either play down some quite overs or go full berserk like razzaq did yesterday... ek dum masst pagalpann... although if that is the situation then it probably means your top order has left you to do too much either in terms of no. of overs left to first do a repair job... or in terms of too steep a required run rate to overcome... but however i like kohli, i just can't fathom him doing the later part...

this is where the selectors and team think tank have gone wrong on two counts in my opinion...

first not checking out if players like uthappa can add value to the team... or if they have already made-up their mind that kohli is the one who will take that job, then not testing him out at that position in real match situations to see how he plays... finish...

the natural question which comes to mind is... are they just going to wake up one day and discover the player they are going to play at no.7 without giving the player in question the opportunity to play at the vital position...?

Wish we had a useful allrounder like Razzler or maybe even Paul Collingwood.Would have been ideal then.

Collingwood...honestly????? We dont need the likes of him in our team.. please dnt ever say that again.. anyone but a super boring english cricketer

Ankita, either you aren't aware how useful somebody like a Collingwood can be,or you just hate him too much.

As such,Collingwood would be way better a number 7 then Ravindra Jadeja.I would pick Irfan Pathan if he is bowling well, but when he isn't,Collingwood would be preferred.

It is time to accept the fact all-rounders are a dying breed. No more Botham's, Kapil Dev et al. They have given place to bits and pieces cricketers who are capable of bowling just one good over per ODI and if luck favors then smash a quickfire 25.):

mayank if razzaq is allrounder than irfan pathan should walk-in in any hall of fame... :)

welcome ankita... keep dropping by...

fully agree with you on that... :)

c'mon mayank... colly's bowling will be taken to cleaners in subcontinent conditions... besides as i said in mu post... i can't see him going bonkers too...

haha... that has been the new definition of late for an all-rounder ott... what a sham...

i also do not understand this fixations with all-rounder when there is none... when specialist can do a far better job...

Think again what you are wishing for, this innings came after four years. India with a strong top order probably can afford players Razzaq at #7 but honestly speaking both Afridi and Razzaq are a burden on Pakistan they fire after 10 matches in the rest they are utter disappointment.

agree with you on that wasim bhai but the counter-view could be if your no.7 bailing you out consistently then your top and middle order isn't doing their job...

Irfan Pathan is way better than Razzaq when he can bowl 10 overs...that hasn't been happening too often recently.Otherwise,India wouldn't need Jadeja and other shitty players.

Collingwood can bat,we have seen that in Ashes. His bowling isn't his strong point, but can chip in with some wicket to wicket bowling.Must not forget his fielding, certainly lights up the environment.

my two pennies regarding this is....india worries too much about the lack of an allrounder in their odi setup...but u gotta remember that the world cup is being held in the subcontinent and the part-timers they have are more than useful and sufficient to fill the fifth bowler's slot in such conditions...yuvraj, raina, sehwag are ideal bowlers for such conditions and can easily do the job...as for a razzaq, raina, kohli and dhoni are all capable of the big hits, and it is a matter of, one of them putting their hand up and doing the job..though dhoni seems to hav become more of an accumulator of late...of the three, raina is the most comfortable when it comes to unfettered aggression, and it might not be a bad idea to keep him for the slog overs...
nice blog, by the way....cheers!

india worries too much about the lack of an allrounder in their odi setup...

exactly my feelings tracer... that is why i do not understand the fuss about it when a specialist can do a fab job...

mayank... why we are hell bent on asking 10 overs from him when we see even zak and nehra not completing their full quota of overs at times...?

team india needs to be flexible here... decide and react on given day at office not premeditate things... specially with pool of decent part-times like sehwag, yuvi, raina etc...

It was never remotely realistic and by the close Abdul Rehman had depleted spirits further with a relentless spell. Rehman took three wickets to leave West Indies down, almost out at 130 for 5; Darren Bravo's 50 was solitary defiance.
