abhimanyu mithun deserves an explanation...

in my last post... is team india a one man army again..? the debate in comments section touched upon the arbitrary selections from our selectors...

the debate was on the way they have played musical chairs with pace bowlers and specially abhimanyu mithun who did more than ok against sri lanka... a tough assignment for any bowler there considering how good sri lanka are at home...

but instead of appreciating his performance there by the way of giving him more opportunities... they have done exactly the opposite... first they replaced jaidev unadkat with injured zaheer and now they have selected unadkat for the sa tour...

what message selectors wants to give a player like abhimanyu mithun...?

that now you are not even an option as fifth bowler...? is this the way our selection panel reward a decent performance against tough opponent in their own den...?

selectors are picking and dropping pace bowlers at random without any apparent logic... another case in point is the selection of umesh yadav... who is the surprise inclusion for sa tour...

may be it was the demand of team think tank... zaheer, nehra, gambhir, sehwag etc have spoken some nice words about yadav in past... as he is seen as india's answer to pace bowler that can give it back to opposition in short bursts...

but if he is going to tour south africa wouldn't it be good for yadav had they selected him for the one day series against new zealand to give him as much overs as possible against a competitive opposition in real match situations...?

south africa tour is seen as 'the tour' for team india... the series win there will go a long way in establishing credentials as the real no.1 test cricket nation... one would assume in such tours where there is lots at stake... there is no scope of passengers... every place would go to the player who can replace a first choice player in case of injury without much loss of balance or keep the first choice players on their heels...

mithun was such bowler who has performed in tough conditions but selectors have preferred a passengers in yadav and unadkat much like dhawal kulkarni who was considered good to be sent to the new zealand tour and forgotten afterwards without given a glance...

True. As always, the selectors have done their circus, at least in Mithun's case. Such things makes one wonder if they are watching these players as much as some of us bloggers do. Pity!

Although I agree with your points SP, selectors have a tough job. Damned if you do, Damned if you don't. However, I do think there is a lack of transparency that muddles up the situation. If they could explain the logic behind their selection in an open way - no matter how flawed it may be - will help build confidence amongst the fans and critics. The ostrich attitude does not help anybody - the fans, the selectors, the board and most importantly, the players.

agree subash that their's is tough job and whatever they do won't be able to satisfy all as there will always be a grudge or two...

having said that... you just can't discard a genuine trier who has done it for you in tough circumstances... can you...?

hence my plea that mithun needs an explanation...

Agree fully. Mithun is playing decently in the domestics too. Yadav and Unadkat are unlikely to play in SA and add value. Why groom someone on a must-win tour? But as far as the SA tour is concerned Munaf would have been a better option as the fourth seamer.

That's why lads who join cricket academies young want to be a batsman.

As you said, performance should always be rewarded; and one should not be bogged down by other considerations, like who bowls short, who bowls yorkers etc.

Bringing to reckoning once and then ignoring for a long time; has hurt Indian pacers most.

ab that is why i believe that selectors should be allowed to talk about commissions and omissions on selection matters...

at least this way we will know their logic of selecting and dropping a player... whether we agree or not...

It's simple SP

See Unadkat is/plays for Saurasthra : Niranjan Shah is there to back him to the hilt.

and Umesh Yadav is/plays for Vidharba and we have our very own Shashank Manohar to back him

It also solves the mystery why a so called Ravindra Jadeja was given such a looooong rope...case in point Rohit Sharma ( the need to find a Mumbai batsman..as it will be the 1st time in Indian history that we won't have a batsmen from Mumbai in test XI ) be sure that Rahane will also get a look in for sure if rohit fails even more..

Some people get more opportunities and a bigger rope when they are backed...

btw Munaf Patel also played more than OK when called upon in SL tests or even the NZ ODI's (best Economy) but unadkat and yadav on plane to SA!

adi... whatever be the reason... one hoped that the selections for the tour as important as sa will have personnel who can push each others for spots...

but now although there are 16 players on the tour party but dhoni practically has only 13 players to choose from a sheer waste of 3 spots... inexplicable...
