india vs australia: another test series... another rambling...

shared by straight point on Monday, September 27, 2010

the farce for a test series will be played between 'arch rivals' india and australia in a few days time... but the rambling in the name of 'mind games' is already on from oz team...

that how indians (specially sehwag) don't like short pitch bowling... there will be chin music... blah.. blah... blah... coming from a team that got thrashed last time when they toured india... why they forgot to implement this 'strategy' last time is the question best left un-answered as far as ponting goes...

can't they find some different expressions... thoughts... to talk about game...? and if not... keep shut like indian camp that is instead of delivery these yawning beauties are just focusing on the preparation for the series...?

coming to preparation... australia's only chance, if there is any, lies in the first innings of team india's batting... that too if they manage to cause damage big enough that can't be recovered in the second innings... as india continue to suffer from this perennial problem of not hitting the ground running... and if australia can't exploit this weakness first up... they can safely say good bye to this series...

...and this is my rambling about india being slow-starters... :)

What do you think about the bowling as even the main bowler Zaheer is coming back from an injury.

If Johnson tries too many short deliveries the keeper and the first slip would be in trouble and not S'wag.

when we went to SL everybody said... look with this attack india just can't take 20 wickets but we did...

i think we have reasonable balance as far as our bowling attack goes... if anything bhajji will feel the pinch for his consistent non-performances but the sight of ozies takes the best out of bhajji and not only with ball...

the curator has said coz of consistent rain in northern india the pitch is not 100% ready... will keep low and slow and we all know if that happens which team is till favor... :)

in fact more than the bowling i am bit worried about gg and dravid...

To be fair I think Australia are just as likely to win this series as the Indians - which if you take it logically will end up being a 1-1 or 0-0 draw.

Essentially I don't rate the Indian bowling much (Harbhajan is not the force he was and you will be heavily relying on Zaheer Khan) and whilst on any other surface I think the Aussie attack would do enough, in India i suspect your aging line up will be too much for them. I.e. a draw!

Either way I think its a travesty to have a series with two such important world teams only being two tests long.

TCH... much has been said about aging india batting line up while oz continue to have hussey... ponting etc... :)

in a way i agree to 1-1 scoreline but if ozies can't win first test i just don't see them winning second...

Likewise SP if India wins the first then I don't see Australia winning the second. Their hopes of drawing and winning the series is heavily pinned on the first test. If they win then they can hope to win the series.

exactly bala... our 'aging' batsmen are batting like a monk with the resolution of steel... and its no coincidence that we have won more test matches than ever before...

that is why we could square a test series in sl even with a rookie attack but for our age old problem of slow start we could have won it too...

@The Compulsive Hooker - Its primarily about return on investment for the hosting board, at the end of the day. An Ashes test series continue to be 5-tests because sponsors are interested in fully occupied stadiums and will pump in the required funds.

It is also dependent on the demography- India touring England next year is a 4-test series, it is so because England/Australia are probably the only 2 countries where Test cricket thrives as good as or more than the limited over format.

travesty, but that's the reality.

This series is a test to see whether this Australian team can learn from their mistakes of 2008.

They were ultra defensive then... and it took 12 wickets from a debutant off-spinner Jason Krejza, who was ready to attack, for Australia to take 20 Indian wickets.

One defensive step... and it will backfire on them big time! I think it is general perception that Australia will need to play differently to win this series, whereas India just need to play their usual home cricket!

and your basis for this sweeping judgment ES?

shri... do they have bowlers to attack all out...? i doubt that...

they could not even stop rahane and che to score quickly got thrashed in second bpxi innings...

raina could be the surprise factor here at home if the foundation is there he can really and quickly take the game away from them and of course our viru is there to soften them first up...

ok sp, tell me what other plausible reasons are there that we don't have a 4 or a 5 test series in India? How long has it been since we ever had such a test series? Ashes are always 5 test series, look at the crowd turn out at the stadiums there and compare it to an India vs Australia test at the sub-continent. Stadiums are very poorly filled.

es... i am not sure attendance at ground is the only and conclusive idea to suggest test follower-ship...

even the ashes is not money spinning option for both ecb and oz and both recovered the money only thru india series which says a lot about the follower-ship of tests in india...

Srini said...

No matter what the viewer-ship in India will always be good. If the series gets interesting, no doubt the turnout will be huge.

shri... if we can call it a series that is... :)

Match attendance, TRPs, ad rates. Fact that Nimbus pays BCCI 31 crore for production of each int'l game in India irrespective of the format. There is enough proof unless you don't want to see it.

straight point said...

and where else a broadcaster gives 31 crore for a test...?

Mahek said...

The comparison is between various formats in India. But if I were to entertain your argument, where else does a broadcaster pay 31 crores for an ODI or T20?

straight point said...

now don't twist it for your convenience... if tests does not warrant 31 crore anywhere but india and specially on those 'oh how we love tests'... that does says a lot...

This is what ES had to say:

"It is also dependent on the demography- India touring England next year is a 4-test series, it is so because England/Australia are probably the only 2 countries where Test cricket thrives as good as or more than the limited over format."

It means in Eng/Aus tests bring in more or less the same amount of revenue as LOIs. It may or may not be true.

You asked him on what basis he made this judgment, so I mentioned a few pointers that indicate LOIs bring in a lot more revenue than tests in India.

The reason anyone will pay 31 crores for production rights for India's matches is due to the size of the market. However, most people would realise paying 31 crores to own the rights of a 3-hour match is a lot costlier than paying the same amount for a 5-day test. It tells you that Nimbus is forecasting that the amount of money they make through advertising for a T20 game is the same as what they make from a test match even though the test is for a much longer duration.

If that and the difference in attendance for tests and LOIs at all Indian venues doesn't tell you what you need to know then there really isn't any point in discussing this. I mean even Chennai, Mumbai and Kolkata don't sell out tests.

straight point said...

hey... were we arguing test viz a viz other 'test' nations... or tests vs t20 or odi with broadcaster's perspective...?

that is why i say throwing lots of words and jargons does not constitute a relevant argument... :)
