lord's elbowgate: landmark judgement from chris broad...

shared by straight point on Wednesday, July 14, 2010

mohammad amir (you read it right... it's amir not ricky ponting) has been gently reprimanded by chris broad... he noted...

"Amir is a young, exciting, talented player full of enthusiasm for this great sport and that is to be celebrated and nurtured," Broad said. "But there are a few things he still has to learn in relation to how to conduct himself on the field of play.

but chris... what about the player who has been captaining national team for years... is second highest scorer in the history of test cricket and featured in more matches than the overs amir has bowled...? why not even a word on him on 'how to conduct himself on field of play'...?

"I told him that when he takes a wicket, he should celebrate with his team-mates rather than getting himself into the personal space of the outgoing batsman. It's a spirit of cricket issue.

so under the (new) spirit of cricket... it is OK if to get elbowed in full glare of fans and media if you infringe a player's space...

no surprise then that pricky does not even find a mention in the judgment and since the precedence has been set... batsmen who were finding it bit restrictive for the want of their personal space but could not find a way to get out of it... now they can elbow whoever who dare to come within their range of 'personal space'... and once again its pricky who has shown them the way by putting his neck on the line...

look at it any which way... this is a remarkable observation... judgment from chris broad...

from now onwards you have elbowed a player or not is not even the contention point anymore... the (other) player stepped into your personal space or not is...

BRILLIANT!!!

He let him (Aamer) off the hook SP.. so how can you blame his judgement.. :)

thanks for reminding me namya...

delivering such a judgment and still come out of it as if he has let the aggrieved party of the hook is a special talent that chris broad has loads of it...

Mohammad Aamer has no "personal space", into which elbows aren't allowed to enter.

This is the conclusion i draw from Mr. B's magnum opus.

K... broad had no choice but to comply to the 'advice' that the man uttered in the empty vessel of on-field umpire...

how dare aamer to come in the vicinity of 'personal space' of the man who in cricket is the law, the judge and the executioner himself...?

I cannot believe what they have made out of this case.Yes,Aamer did it econd time, but don't they see Ricky Ponting' mistake. He should have learned something from Micheal Clarke and just walked off without elbowing.
How can you warn a young 19-year old just for being excited, because he is ought to be excited after getting world's second highest wicket taker.

But what did he do? In the video available on youtube, it is apparent that Aamer had already turned away from Ponting before Ponting got his elbow out?

What I am interested in is, what is the judgment in this case. Is it that Aamer deliberately bumped into Ponting? Or is it that Aamer was clumsy?

Also, if this was not a Code of Conduct ruling, is the Match Referee authorised to speak about it publicly?

Broad's judgement is a stark contrast from what he had delivered in October 2008 on the Gambir - Watson elbowgate incident. I have reflected upon my views in my latest blog post: http://cricsis.blogspot.com/2010/07/elbowgate-part-2.html

Punter looked even more arrogant when he went all whining about it to everyone in his way to pavilion, rubbish from such a great(?) player and captain of a dominating team. Aussie charm?

freehit... i am not that worried about aamer being warned coz it will be good for him as i don't wanna see him sitting in fence (rightly or wrongly) for the so called 'excitement'...

what i am worried is that not a single word on pricky and how he stretched his elbow out to deliberately hurt aamer and the funny part is nobody is denying this too that he did it purposely...

K... from the link of cricinfo it is clear that they have made this incident as clear one-sided offense from aamer... that is why there is not even a mention of ponting in chris's observations...

why bother about such nuances like whether he was in his right to speak publicly about his judgement if it involves the man with highest integrity... pricky...?

shri... broad is the practitioner of saying that says "being inconsistent is the purest form of consistency..."

...and thanks for the link... i have commented there...

mudassar... he has always been like this or should i say, allowed to be like this...

i laugh it loud when the worst behaved captain in the history of cricket talks about impeccable integrity...

The rules are funny because the batsman has to create his own space while he's running between the wickets, but apparently the bowler has to give him space when he's dismissed.

The whole second offense thing is utterly ridiculous. Aamer immediately apologised to Clarke during the Twenty20 because he knew he ran into him. However, he wouldn't even have made contact with Ponting had that beacon of virtue not stuck out his elbow.

Ponting is a grumpy idiot who can't come to terms with failure. Sadly, some people extol this as him being competitive and accuse others of being unsportsmanlike when they behave the same way.

agree with you mahek... first one has to display sporty nature before asking the same from others but such is the way for oz team for quite a time which has been more profound in pricky tenure and one can see why...

but the crux of the problem is where does the question of space comes up if you make physical contact with your opponent other than for shaking hands and patting his back...?

when it is established beyond doubt that he did it deliberately then other things seizes to matter... this was conveniently overlooked which is unfortunate...
