how do you feel after zimbabwe loss...?

shared by straight point on Friday, June 04, 2010

okay... make it after second successive zimbabwe loss...

when team india was announced for zimbo tri-series tour... the feeling one got was... its going to be an easy tour with zimabawe, well, being zimbabwe and sri lanka too testing its bench strength...

even if first choice players were rested... there was still enough talent in batting department which will take care of not so potent seam bowling backed up with next best quality spinners in mishra and ojha...

after three matches and two losses... i am in a way glad that they have been tested... they are given enough lessons on how to pace innings... how one can be easily bogged down if one not looks at scoring or not rotating strike enough... one cannot play cricket fearing failure... or to save one's place...

contrary to the perception that they respected zim bowlers too much... i think they took them very lightly... they thought that they can switch gears as and when they wanted to... forgetting that it becomes increasingly difficult to break the shackles once the innings gets defined in certain way...

if they look just one further match back against sri lanka... when the time was to deliver that the killer punch (that bonus point)... they opted for an easy win... and now that decision will haunt them for now they have no option but to go for the same they let go so lazily...

these are important lessons to be learned... and i am glad some of them are learning it at very early stage of their careers...

As you say, India went for an easy win, ignoring the bounus point,my observation is India under any captain, in last 20 years, never went for the kill. They just manage to win. Don't slot this statement as a generalization, I'm referring to a general attitude towards winning.

AB... i have seen many a times
when we needed the target in specified overs we achieved it
but here it was different
we not needed it as badly
thinking oh we will anyway beat zim
and now they will repent that move...

where the generalisation comes into picture...?

by Generalization, I was referring to statement I made.

Zimb spinners went for just around four an over and that is just hard to fathom as the pitch was good.

Is Vijay good enough to play international cricket?

oh may bad Ab... i thought you are making a generalize statement out of this loss... :)

Is Vijay good enough to play international cricket?

wonder why it was not asked after his test innings... the supposed to be real cricket... :)

the thing is he is still finding the bearing or right pace at which he should go for his innings...

he wants to prove a point and in doing so diverting from his game which is to play straight...

now he is playing across the lines even to the straight deliveries and in doing so getting soft dismissals... but make no mistake he is a batsman with sound technique... good temperament and fluency...

His technique didn't look good against South Africa when they banged it short at Kolkota

straight point said...

that is because he is basically a front foot player... confronted that for the first time in an international setup...

let me quote what gavaskar once said... if any batsmen does not have problem against short pitch and moving balls... bowlers can pack their bags home... :)

he is young... given time he has it in him to take the reins...

Barry said...

He also doesn't have much footwork as can be seen by his dismissal in the first innings of the first test against South Africa. IMHO he doesn't seem to have much potential.

to this i can only say that... mark my words... we are gonna get lots more chances to disagree on vijay... :)

SP,

I had put up a post some day's back stating that this is not even India 2nd string team, it is blessed please the ipl team

i stand by that, and this loss only rubs that in.

Hey everyone,
I was reading the comments made and I have to say that Murali Vijay has the caliber. He has shown it in Test in the limited chances that he has been given and also in T20.I think its too early to draw conclusions on this guy,and he is probably under a lot of pressure, because he knows, that even if he plays well,Gautam Gambhir and Virender Sehwag will take his place provided both are fit.
Anyways, lets hope India does better in next game.

Cheers,

thanks ankit for the link...

this bags the question the what is called second string and who are second string players then...?

and what players (that u have listed) offer that we don't know already?

welcome mayank on SP hope you will keep dropping by...

its not that i am not disappointed with vijay... i am... but my disappointment is limited to the fact that he has not challenged VS and GG enough for the top slot... and trying to be what he is not... but having said that i do not doubt that he will get more chances in future and he will bounce back...

Don't know what people see in Murali Vijay even in tests. Looks shit to me and thinks he's God's gift to this planet.

He'd never been tested before the test series against South Africa. Looked out of sorts in each of the 3 innings that series. Again, not tested in the IPL and shone there. Then he gets tested in the Caribbean and Zimbabwe and looks woefully out of sorts. In case of Vijay he didn't just look out of sorts, he looked like he didn't give a shit. The run out in the first game when he didn't even stretch to make his ground and the three subsequent innings in which he was more than happy to block showed where he stands in terms of his attitude.

Sunny's response to Indians being uncomfortable against the short ball has been the same for decades. He conveniently ignores the fact that there's a difference between struggling against a bouncer at 140 kph to one at 120 clicks. This is the guy who hasn't contributed anything to Indian cricket since he retired. His single biggest legacy is showing players how to play for individual accolades.

It was hyped as a second string squad. After today's defeat, I'm not ready to call it even a G-string squad.

g-string... hahaha

wicked som!!

@Mahek;

I have never seen you contribute a single positive thing to any argument till date.. Maybe you are Sunny (as per your definition) and atleast he contributed till he played Cricket. (If you can play an over from Balaji, I will bow down)

namya

the drawback with contributing positively to an argument is that it ends there... while you can have lots of time pass insinuating... :)
