kotla fiasco: who will stand for us...?

shared by straight point on Monday, January 04, 2010

while surfing i came across this interesting comment made by mathew gullick on kotla fiasco at line and length blog... excerpt from the comment goes like this...

I, too, have not seen any of the coverage from this game, but presumably even with an "unfit" track it would have been possible for both sides to have agreed to send down 50 overs of spin bowling in order to give the spectators a match.

now this is very interesting thought...

even if kotla pitch was unfit for play... the match (even if rescheduled one) could have taken place and innocent fans, who were sucked into buying tickets on the promise of watching their favorite players play a good game of cricket, could have been saved from the disappointment and frustration...

we have seen all pace attack in a game of cricket... then why not all spin attack... what is so outrageous about it that it can never be thought upon as an option...?

we have seen a captain proactively trying to squeeze in some overs from day's play by bowling spinners when danger of bad light looms... then why not the same urge to save a game for spectators...?

ddca did what they did... and going by their ability to dig new lows they will all be laughing silently as this gives them an opportunity to stuff more money in their coffers under the new head 'on account of damages by riotous crowd'... talk about seeing opportunity in adversity...

icc got the opportunity to score some brownie points on bcci to set some records straight... so even after the match went on for 24 overs the pitch was rated as 'unfit' instead of 'poor'...

media got the opportunity to blow it as they wish to... with an opportunity of a pregnant sequel...  for if the ban is say about two years... they will report it as... is bcci loosing its powers...?

or if the punishment is light by their 'standards' they will report it as how the bcci used its growing muscles to set the matter in their favors... talk about win-win situation...

but what about the common man who pays for a ticket from his pocket to see the match on ground... and gets punished for the 'crime'... nobody spares a thought for a fan who has made the game what it is today...

why it is so difficult to think about a paying fan... ?

They refund the paying fan's money; what about his time? Glad I turned down a ticket for the game. Tough question: who gets the refund for a free ticket?

Take it, most of the dilli ticks were free, so in a way, people made money because of the abandoned match.

ah! that's another head 'on account of gate money refund'...

you should fight for ddca election sometime... :)

but seriously you were right nc... ddca is a kotha where actually its fans and hopefuls who perform mujra for their entertainment...

It is an interesting suggestion, but I think that would have made for a farcical game... and I don't know if such a game would have deserved ODI status... if they had gone on with an exhibition game with only spinners then maybe, but don't forget that you paid for tickets to an ODI match and as such you deserve to see one, not some temporary patch work because the authorities didn't do their job properly.
why it is so difficult to think about a paying fan... ?
Hah! What about all those stupid ads on TV for the paying fans whose money actually runs this sport... until there is a strong consumerist body which can demand rights for us, there is little chance that things will ever be done with much thought spared to the common fan.

ach... so are you implicating that to accord an international status to a fifty over game at least one pacer must play...?

regarding the body... i heard sometime back that there is going to be a sort of media watch dog committee but that's that...

Haha, thats a nice way to twist it SP, but what I'm saying is that if a pitch is so bad that you cannot bowl pace without injuring a batsman and therefore are forced to play gentle spinners just to make up the overs, you're playing a farcical match which should not be accorded ODI status, because for a proper ODI match you should be able to bowl whatever kind of bowling is possible and legal without being restricted by the pitch's condition.

yes i understand that pitch should not come in way of choosing a bowler but to finish a game for spectators its not a bad option when the situation like kotla happens... same way if the track is spinning too much they should bowl pacers...

as i said when in emergency a bad light scenario can force a captain to bowl spinner then why not...?

and once the game is finished match referee has the right to write report on the pitch and recommend the ban... this way at least the paying public gets the game... coz refunding money is like a sick joke for ddca...

I remember in Indore,my hometown, they played some crazy ass show match after the cancellation, which I guess was more insulting. Best way is to cancel the match, which they did in Delhi, to highlight the incompetence and refrain DDCA from using that as an excuse.

They have played a lot of cricket on Kotla this year even though the pitch was shit as ever. So one more match of total spin, would have been treated just like - one more occasion to spin the actual state for Daljeet Singh.

here its different i am not advocating exhibition match or as you have put it 'crazy ass show' i am taking about full fleged international match... and as i said the severity of penalty does not depend on whether the match was canceled/abandoned or carried on for spectators...

The ground stands disgraced but the goons go scotfree. Banning ground would not solve problem. Ban the goons.

you have put it better som...

what we are doing right now is shooting the messenger without even caring to look who send it...
