mohammad kaif: what keeps you going...?

shared by straight point on Friday, January 29, 2010

another selection has come with hope and gone with disappointment... the wait for a call is getting longer by the day... kaif has become the forgotten man of indian cricket... and nobody has cared to explain the reasons for it...

this was his best chance in a while to break into team india... and despite scoring a double ton and a century in back to back innings... i wonder his name was even discussed in the selection meeting... he was not even deemed fit to feature in board president xi...

before that they ignored him from rest of india squad and also the challenger trophy where the cream of indian cricket lock horns with one another...

kaif last played for team india in india's tour of west indies in 2006 and as you can see below in tour averages he did not fair bad at all... certainly not the way he has been treated since then...

unlike others... despite disappointments and setbacks this man has never complained... every time the hope of being selected for team india comes and goes without a trace... he has shunned that disappointment and did what he does best... play the game he dearly loves... with an aim to fight that lost place back...

but still there is no encouragement... no acknowledgment of efforts he puts in in whatever little opportunities he is getting now... nobody comes to him to say he belongs... nobody puts a hand on his shoulder... pats his back to make him feel wanted... when you see players names getting discussed by selectors after performing in a game or two... when you know time is ticking very fast... when you see selectors look at other directions when 202 not out is written on board against your name... what do you do...?

you score another century...

what keeps you going kaifu...?

What keeps him going is something that should keep every cricketer going: Love of the Game. Also, first class cricket pays well nowadays. What's more, at the end of this IPL season he would have made more than 2 million dollars from the Royals. So why wouldn't you keep playing?

so easy mahek... isn't it...? :)

I'd gladly do this if I were being paid that much to play cricket, but that's a different topic.

Take a closer look at the stats you put up, Kaif had only one score of over 50 in six innings. Not exactly a mark of consistency.

Kaif has had a good first class season but there are others who have been putting up similar if not better numbers for the past few years. I'm glad one of them got a chance that was long overdue. I'd have also liked another middle order batsman in the side as I'd play Laxman at 3 which means Vijay has to miss out. I don't want the opener to get a middle order spot.

I think they should groom Vijay as a number 3 - the openers are still young while Dravid is on his last legs.

It was expected of the board SP... BCCI has a habit of forgetting players once they are dropped.. a similar example is parthiv patel.. who has done much better in domestic cricket in the pst 3 yrs when compared to Saha.. but still...

I agree with jogesh about grooming vijay at #3.. somehow i feel that either he or Kohli will be the next #3.

This is more bizzare considering the kind of pampering which Yuvraj receives in Test arena. Hopefully the people will take more interest in Ranji trophy like this year, which will make all this eefort of him and several people worthwhile

yes mahek... first class cricket pays well these days... and also there is ipl... i wonder why these players still keep fighting for national place... so stupid of them...

also when vijay can play one down for his state team i don't see any valid reason why he can not do the same for national team...?

tho you might be interested in what i said about murali a while ago...

welcome jogesh...

yes... he will be our no.3 in a time if he does not mess up things i.e. he has got everything that is needed for the spot... now only if he keeps converting the starts into bigger ones...

tri... unfortunately but true... that was expected of them...

my point is about probing what sin he was committed to be treated this way...?

straight point said...

exactly indophile...

when we see certain players being pampered and are almost pushed to become a test bat... one feels for kaif... he was never given a second look... despite scoring as consistently as other names that are hailed as future of indian cricket...

Trideep said...

SP, the sin that he has committed is that he has managed to get himself dropped once from the Indian squad. Or may be the board likes the face of Yuvraj more than Kaif... U c.. its totally his fault after all!!!

I think that 148 irked many people. Quite a few felt there could have been a cse for 2-0.

but sb... he score at the rate of 60 which is reasonable pace for test even now... his century came in first innings... and if captain takes longer to declare... please elaborate how could kaif be blamed for that...?
