tale of two draws seen from jaundiced eye...

shared by straight point on Friday, December 11, 2009

a team chasing a target of 330 runs at home against a lowly ranked team... saves a test match by batting 75 odd overs... on a pitch that remained true till last ball...

cut to scene two...

a team coming behind from a precarious situation of 32/4 in first innings... facing a lead of 330 odd in second... bats 130 odd overs against a team that is ranked no. 2 to save a test match at home... on a pitch that remained true till last ball...

end result...?

the former was an 'engrossing' draw... a savior of test cricket... while the later was pronounced as a 'boring' draw that would kill test cricket...

the difference...?

one draw was played in australia... while the later... in india...

This is probably not the best example when you consider the fact that only 21 wickets fell in Ahmedabad compared to 35 in Adelaide. There was also some sharp turn and reverse swing. I think the Adelaide Test would have seen a result had it been between India and Sri Lanka. The test in Ahmedabad had no chance of producing a result once Dravid and Yuvraj settled in.

In addition to what Mahek has alluded to, the other reason the Adelaide test got more positive review was because WI played extremely well. Which as we all very well know is a rarity these days.

In response to Mahek and TG, the recovery from 4/32 to 424 odd and then saving the game by scoring 4/412 is also a positive stuff and comes under "playing well"

just that the vision needs to be improved and honesty be employed in appreciating something Indian.

"I think the Adelaide Test would have seen a result had it been between India and Sri Lanka."

i take is as compliment to the competitiveness of india and srilanka and inaptness on oz to force an issue against a woeful team that too at home...

the could not even score 330 odd in a day against a team that is fighting to survive at international level...

oz atleast had chance or motivation to win on final day against india who had no option but to play out draw to survive in the match... so the external pressure was more on india than say oz...

TG...

yes i accept that was the only positive from the match... but certainly not the 'engrossing' draw...

exactly sam... exactly my point... both draws should be condemned/appreciated in unbiased manner... without hidden agenda...

If you're really unbiased you will realise that draw was the only possible result in the Ahmedabad Test midway through Day 4 while all three results were possible in Adelaide when play started on Day 5. Granted it wasn't an edge of the seat draw, but it was a lot more even contest between bat and ball. One also needs to remember that Australia were without Ben Hilfenhaus while the West Indies were missing Jerome Taylor and Fidel Edwards.

i would take that to inaptness of oz team... they could not even muster the courage to chase 330 odd runs against a team on which questions are being raised to whether test status should be revoked... and settled for a meaningless and tame draw... to keep their ranking as well as lead intact...

my problem with it is that... that the draw too was tame... not engrossing... as has been reported...
