rip genuine spinner...

shared by straight point on Sunday, November 01, 2009

at least from the odi scenario... the last rituals were performed at feroz shah kotla ground yesterday...

if the diminishing art of genuine spin bowling was not enough... the final nail in the coffin has been provided by innovative captains these days... they think playing a genuine spin bowler is the luxury they can ill afford in the age of monogoose bats...

only being a good spinner just won't serve these days... you should know how to use long handle too... basically the captains are looking more from you and hence they stuff their side with bowlers who can also provide them alternate skill... and in doing so they are ready to compromise even on the primary skill at times...

today's captain don't use genuine spinner as attacking option anymore... and somehow the idea of wickets too slows down the scoring rate in middle doesn't seem to justify selection in their eyes anymore...

the new age spin bowler is the one who bowls with less pace than a fast medium... who bowls with a short run up and quickly finish the over... there by he saves time and improves over rate... and in the process if he gets wicket then its a bonus... and of course he knows how to use long handle when needed to compensate...

that is why we see genuine spin bowlers like amit mishra and jon holland sit out on a surface everybody knows will assist this very breed... following this innovative thinking pattern...

naturally you will ask... so why they still select them in the squad then...?

good question... if someone knows the answer... i am all ears...

Out of curiosity, is Ojha injured? I just can't understand his exclusion. Or Ravinda Jadeja's inclusion. Or DKNY's return after being dropped, I mean you're dropped for a reason right, not because there were better players who deserved the opportunity, because otherwise they would have played.
Regarding this post and Bhajji, all I will say is that if you are one of Sachin's favs you are far more likely to have an extended run in the team than most.

no sir! ojha is not injured... but when second spinner is finding it difficult to find place in final xi in a dream pitch like kotla then what purpose will it serve ojha... i think he is better bowling in domestic games rather than warming bench...

dkny is the new emergency man of india... i think he even sleeps with his kit in his toe... :)

as for bhajji yes granpa is taking care of the kid very well... i have not seen a frontline spin bowler bowling this type of crap consistently... hats off to bhajji it requires a special talent to do this...

I think the onus is on the spinners to make their mark in tests and then find a permanent place in the LOI squad, if they can adapt. I do not see too many spinners across the world who have found a footing first in the ODI game....I may be wrong

Also I do not believe captains are averse to spin per se....

its the matter of individual opinion golandaaz... but the circumstantial evidence points to other way if you look around to the composition of most teams in one day setup...

the specialist spinners are finding it difficult to break into the team and (for example) if not for the alternate skills of bhajji as bat i doubt he would have been playing as the first choice spinner...

welcome BBC... you see there is so much spin talent it hurts that we still carry the dart bowler in the team as if he is the only spinner left in the country...
