how splitting odi innings can work...

shared by straight point on Monday, September 07, 2009

in my last post i argued how splitting odi innings is not a solution...

but after thinking hard over it i think it can work if we use first innings 25 over mark of both teams as forced declaration point...

so if teamA scores say 180/5 in first 25 overs... the innings should be called off automatically and the opposition teamB steps in and if say they score160/4 after their first innings of 25 overs the teamA should resume their innings from 180/5 score onwards...

this will solve some purpose of making odi interesting as:

  • teams in first innings won't go slam bang from start like t20 thinking they are not gonna lose too many wickets in 25 overs... they will look to save wickets for second innings... there by making middle overs interesting too which is the biggest blemish on current odis...
  • rather than giving players like sehwag... gayle two shots at a target... who have it in them to murder you in one innings only... it will give them only one chance...
  • the middle order batsmen will too get some say in the game as giving top order batsmen two chances for a target will virtually kill them...
  • this will make second innings equally important as more focus will be on it from teams as well as fans points of view to keep the interest going...
  • well for bowlers... nothing changes as usual... they will in either case get two chances to have a go at batsmen... with a welcome break of innings in between...

so in this way rather than looking as two back to back t20 games being played in middle... odis will stand on its own without losing too much of its sanity... if splitting the innings is the only solution that is...

Will they continue with the same ball which was used till the 25th over or take a new one?

Then, what about D/L syetm? If the second innings finds rain...?

And the bowlers would continue to be restricted to their quota just as batsmen to their tenure at the wicket?

nice posers sb!

i think they can continue with the old ball if that is not out of shape...

for the d/l system if rain happens in first innings they can restrict the second innings for the same no of overs...but giving some cushion to the score of team batting first like we do in odis and t20s...

and if the break happens in second innings they can have a one innings 25 overs match each to decide a winner...?

as for bowlers they get 5 overs for each innings...

SP... A clarification.... When team A bats again... Should they resume their innings at the previous score and wickets or is it a fresh start and the average of two innings score taken.

sorry scorpy for not conveying the idea clear enough...

basically 50 overs cricket remains same but just the swapping of side after 25 overs...

they resume from the same score and wicket they were at the first attempt of 25 overs...
