what is sporting pitch…?

hello...any demons there...?

the general consensus has been that it should be batting beauty for first two days and later should aid seamers and spinner alike...there should be enough bounce to keep the bowlers interested who are ready to bend their back...while the ball should come at nice pace to bat so that batsmen get the full worth of their shots...

if all pitches are gonna be this ‘sporting’ then what about the geographical parameters...?

where will be the home advantage...?

...and then there is discrimination on ‘sporting’ wickets too...

if the pitch offers seam or swing movement from ball one they say that batsmen were tested for their technique to play good seam/swing bowling...

but if the same ball takes slightest of spin from day one...they say oh what a bad pitch...name it dust bowl...as if that spinning wicket doesn’t test batsmen’s technique...

if pitch is offering good bounce they say...get ready for some chin music dude...

but if ball keeps bit low they discard it as under prepared pitch...

there will always be some prickyfication (synonym to whining when on receiving end of it while happily doing the same at every possible opportunity) on pitches...

so how to have unanimous ‘sporting’ wickets...?

i guess most nations have got better seamers than the tweakers that they have got!

with the exception of SL probably!

with anilbhai gone, India can not boast of that legacy any more, but until some time back....

talking about until some time back, even pak had some damn good tweakers...

and until some time back, only warne was a celebrated spinner from teams outside the subcontinent!

no, i am not putting up the same old repeated victimisation of subcontinental curators and 'prickyfication' of their pitches, at least not in so many words!

Prickyfication - are we talking about pickling Pricky Ponting? :)

hey ankit bro...long time no see...

you too seems to have forgotten earnest but not glamorous spinners like mishra and ojha...

ott...

references to any dead or living players is purely coincidental... ;-)

SP,

what i meant was indian seamers were better than indian spinners right now, the ones that the team plays!

and the only one the team plays is bhajji!

and yeah, i will try to be a little more regular!

In my opinion dead pitches which do not assist spinners or seamers should be banned, if test cricket has to be saved, all these ideas of day & night tests and the reduction of test to four days will not work the only thing which might save the format is by making the constest between bat and ball more even.

I think this is a serious issue. Pitches worldwide are becoming homogenous strip. Earlier, a batsman worth his salt had to excell in Indian dustbowls, Australian minefields and English seaming strips before establishing his credentials. Now there is a concerted effort to roll all pitches where the lone purpose of the ball would be to come in a straightline and at a convenient height so that even a bilndfolded batter can smack it out of the park.

thanks ankit...

if fit and in form we have got the bowlers who can bowl in all conditions...but bcci rhetoric rotation policy is doing them more than the hectic schedule...

indeed wasim...day night matches will be like selling old wind in new bottle...but if the wine is not good the 'sale' wont pick up... :)

som & wasim...

do we have batters who can sustain contest between bat and bowl...?

i seriously doubt it...the moment ball start to do something we end up seeing 3-4 days test matches... :)

We have to remember two things first the game of any batsman or bowler naturally evolves to play in the conditions where he usually plays,if world over flat tracks are being prepared naturally modern batsmen will be less equipped to survive on such tracks, but I think most batsmen will learn to adapt and improve their technique.

I love the sight when bowlers make batsmen struggle, make the hop around the crease, make them fall with toe crushing swinging yorkers and fool them in the air and off the pitch with their movement for me that sight is more pleasing than a batsman hitting a six on a flat track. So if just because of good bowling a test finishes in 4 days for me it is more exciting than a five day draw or a match in which the real battle is only between the batsmen.

very said wasim...

but as much as flat track and draws are bad thing for tests...the lotteries kind matches too are not good for test cricket a la new zealands' wickets in 2003...

but i agree more players play on the pitches who aid seamers...swing bowlers and spinners...
