is dhoni finishing badrinath or rohit...?

shared by straight point on Saturday, July 04, 2009

I too noticed Rohit stays and Nair is in for YP. Now folks - is MSD finishing Badri or Rohit?

this deadly question...reproduced here...was put up by fellow blogger late inswing (of 'the morning after' fame) in response to my last post on badrinath...which i thought deserve to be put upfront...for the sheer relevance in context of team india's prevailing (non)selection policy...

badri we don't need to emphasise again...that having been picked for windies tour...and specially after seeing performances of some lessor skilled and jaded players...he should have been playing there...but for his special 'camaraderie' he seems to share with captain dhoni...which is discussed at length here... thereby almost killing his chances to be picked for champions trophy later this year...

rohit...on other hand has done more than enough to warm benches...in fact through his odi performances he has been pleading to be left alone...but still being persisted with in final xi...which again is not his fault...

so who is finishing whom...?

is msd finishing badri or is it rohit...?

Badri is a class player and so is Rohit but right now Rohit doesn't feel himself in World cricket so I propose tat Badri should take his place.

It's not fair for him just to go along with the team in every tour and not play a single game.....

:(

Many thanks for the mention SP.

Just as well for Badri's case that he was overlooked in that 22 over shoot-out. A 2*(2) would NOT have helped his case in any manner.

Something similar happened to Rohit in that game. And that will not help his cause. DK if he playes exceptionally today could edge him out when SRT & Viru return.

Badri would have to hope that one of the big three cite a personal reason and pull out of the next test series , whenever it comes. There is no guarantee, though, Dhoni might play 'talents' such as Ravindra Jadeja in the test XI ahead of Badri...

Tailpiece: Credit to Dhoni for his consistency and the way he managed to pull of the win. Windies will feel sore and with no Edwards, they are a little short of artillery for todays encounter.

cpd...as it happened he dint played...how frustrating it wud be for badri to see his fate on the hands of person who don't even bother about him...

late inswing...

there has to be some way...so that players like badri, pujara can be selected without any prejudice...

hailing from small city and experiencing up and down himself i thought dhoni would at least be fair to earnest players...but not...

he seems to have made a 'group' and is not willing to see further than that...

reg dhoni the batsmen i commented on naked post as well that i hail him as the last of youngster lot who uses his head...i don't have any problem with dhoni the bat in odi setup i.e.

Straight, Sam, Late - some great points here.

I am not quite sure how things fit in:

1, 2 : Viru, Gambhir, Sachin, Karthik

3: MSD (Safe to say that in ODIs , he prefers this spot)

4: Yuvraj singh - no arguments here

5: ________ : only spot up for contention where someone from the outside can fit in. The folks in contention are:
Rohit, Raina, Jadeja , Pujara, DK (if Sachin comes back), Badrinath, Pujara etc

Rohit, Raina, Jadeja almost seem considered as investments for the "future" - and like I mentioned elsewhere - 1 big score from any of themthem will be equal to 3-4 big scores from any of the others. The biggest problem is that India , for some reason, believes less in late bloomers (eg. Badri), and wants more of "young superstars". They have to realize that a Sachin, Yuvraj doesn't happen every day, and take a leaf out of the Aussie notebook who drafted in players like Hayden, Hussey , Langer etc in ther late 20s and optimized their use to tremendous effect.

Additionally, the others have a bit of a bowler in them- giving them the edge. Almost everyone in the list is a good fielder . So who does that leave out at the end? It's a little unfair.

6: Y. Pathan- too low down the order for others already.

7- 11 bowlers/allrounders

Alternatively, it is possible that Badri might have stolen Dhoni's lunchbox during the IPL season once too often :-)

welcome back fark... :)

must say...very nice round up...

rainas, rohits etc have been given long rope...while we have not yet tested players like badri, pujara and till we wont throw them in the heat we will never know what they can offer...

y.pathan has not done anything till now to deserve a certainty in final xi...

that's why i was disappointing with the team selection...and think dhoni missed the trick there...he should have checked out others too...while at one hand it wud have given much needed rest to some jaded players but also subtle reminder to complacency creeping in...

on another hand how i wish we would have been facing the same conundrum with our bowling...

i am already missing sree santh... :)

Dhoni is not a newcomer to captaincy and has been at the job for almost two years now.

From these selections/non-selections it is clear that he has his prefernces and is NOT willing to look beyond them. One cannot otherwise explain why he kept out Badri, whom he has observed for 2 years in the IPL.

Similarly, what must Ojha do to get into the playing XI ahead of Harbhajan Singh. Ojha showed enough guile in the T20 and got hit only in one match by Bravo. By dropping him like a hot potato, Dhoni is only playing with the youngster's confidence.

There can be no excuse, in these days and age that a captain has "not noticed" a particular player and hence did not know whether to give him a break or not.

I agree with SP that there has to be some way of ensuring that people like Badri, Mishra, Ojha, Vijay and DK do not fall by the wayside on one person's whims.

Whether, this can be acheived by a democratic dressing room environment, or hands-on selection committee, no one knows.

For instance, Andrew Hilditch is supposed to have told Marcus North in pretty plain language that he would have to produce the goods to be in contention for a test slot. If it happens in this case, there would be a hue and cry about "parochialism", whereas it is MSD who is playing favourites here.

What puzzles me is that Cricinfo is seems to be absolutely absolving the team management of this oversight. Not even in 1 match preview of the 'meaningless series' have I seen a word written about Badri's possible inclusion.

It is as if the establishment has ostracised him. That would be very unfair indeed.

exactly late...

he can't excuse for the lack of knowledge about player...and ur example of him observing badri for two years in ipl and ojha exclusion is the apt cases of him playing favoritism...

in long turn this will only hamper his chances coz with favoritism comes the complacency which you can already see happening thru the performances of some players with bhajji leading them...

once they know that captain is willing to look beyond...and their place is not guaranteed in final xi coz they belong to 'group' they will be on their toes and will keep on evolving their game...

dhoni must use coming break to break away from this 'quota' system...

There's only one man who can stop all this mess:

Ajit Agarkar.

Pity he's on a sabbatical.

straight point said...

hahaha good one fark...

don't stuff these ideas in our selectors minds...you never know... ;-)

Prabu said...

Fark,

Truth is that Agarkar at least took wickets by the bucketful despite giving away runs. Our current crop gives away runs and doesn't take wickets....

straight point said...

prabhu...that was in earlier part of his career...in later part he was as good as 'current' bowlers... :)

tho current bowlers can sight fatigue...i will give them next series as benefit of doubt...but problem is there isn't any series in between...we are heading straight to champions tropy...which is bit scary coz we are late starters...and by the time we will come to form it might be all over... :(
