ipl...the enemy within...

shared by straight point on Monday, May 04, 2009

in my last few posts i have praised bcci, ipl organisers for some good work they have done...so to restore balance it is natural that i should criticise them too...for apparent flaws...

i have been following ipl like most fans and more than the time-outs...cheer leaders dresses (or the lack of it)...extraa innings...tv coverage...etc...i am deeply disturbed by the fact that ipl organisers are hell bent on making it a cricket circus (if not already)...while it has all the potential of becoming a great...competitive...intense and respected league...apart from being the success it is...

the player are playing it with striking intensity...so you are seeing prince flintoff diving to stop boundary...he doesn’t even do it for england...dravid throwing his fist in air...looking far more involved in the game...with such an aggression that you won’t see him doing in an international match...ramesh power diving to stop the ball as if someone told him that his life depended on it...just to give some examples...

how i wish that ipl organizers too would have shown the same intensity as they have shown in organising ipl itself...

so we see yuvraj getting away without reprimand after coming to toss in shorts...gibbs showed no restrain in hurling abuses at umpire after given lbw...shane warne didn’t think twice before giving his piece of mind to the umpire on giving wide balls against his liking in that super over game...to list a few...

before the start of tournament...ipl organizers declared that they will adhere to mcc’s spirit of the game...which says...

respect opposition...respect umpires...respect laws and respect game...

they also declared that they will play this tournament under icc rules and regulations...

i wonder if these faulting players would have gotten away with this kind of behavior in an international match...specially yuvraj...who has openly insulted the game we all love and follow religiously...

it seems that ipl organisers vision and efforts are limited to seeing off that ipl is a success... monetarily only...they appear least worried about the fact that they are in a way disrespecting the very game they are banking for the success of ipl... ignoring the fact that true success of ipl is to make it not only a commercial blockbuster but to a make it a league which is equally respected if not more...

they can still salvage the situation...by setting the priority right...and best part is that it requires even less effort than the effort they put in shifting the whole ipl!

they must look at these incidents very seriously and come hard on offenders without further delay to earn the true respect of officials involved...followers...and fans alike...then...and only then ipl will be true success...otherwise it will be like a blockbuster movie whose producer laugh all the way to bank but offering very little in the name of cinema...

The umpires are being treated like some lesser life form. Reckon the players know they can get away with crap - why not go all the way and pull off a WWF style tamasha, have the rouge players throw some punches, break a few bones while they’re at it.

Btw Mr. Modi, that was a joke.

SP, gotta say these things, they do take us bloggers very seriously y’kno

SP,

the thing about yuvi coming to shorts, me thinks modi is trying to make it a compulsion for all captains, forget reprimands!

Is there a law regarding wat captains should wear to a toss?

yes NC who has more gundaas type player win the match...why bother with bat and ball show for 40 overs...?

yes ankit...he should also arrange for fashion parade of players in whatever clothes they feel comfy with during breaks...of course it will be a sponsored event...

i thot u would be knowing better than me Q... :)

icc recently issued directives to all boards about the infield demeanor of players...if my memory serves me right there were talks of dhoni being fined for wearing faded pads!

if a captain can be fined for wearing faded pads then what about a captain coming to toss in shorts...?

ipl organisers convinently looked other way almost corroborating yuvraj's act...which i feel is more disgusting and condemning than most of trivial issues they get flak for...

I remember the faded pads controversy.. but I dont think there's a regulation governing what captains shud wear at the toss.. remember those Steve Waugh - Saurav Ganguly tosses? Waugh dressed in blazer and all and Saurav coming out in his tracks?

I dont think there's a dress code, but i could be wrong.

SP, what about Warney getting away with field changes after every ball, pontificating in between balls, and changing instructions to bowlers and fielders. He has still not been fined for slow over rates. With all that tinkering, his over rate must sure be sub-Pontingeque yet nobody dares fine him. Even Gilly gets fined. Warne and his aura,eh?

straight point said...

yes raj...this is another example of their lethargy in implementing the strict punishment as per rules and regulations...

(its just me or what...i see most matches going over the time limit...)

raj, while commenting here, Warne's tactics were on my mind - but yeah it's odd he doesn't get fined, so i was thinkn maybe he, pathan and the other slowcoaches makeup for the over-rate.

SP, for a change, I beg to differ with you and side with Modi. BloGod knows noone have been harsher on him than me but even I have to admit that he deserves a break.
The fact is, he wanted to adhere to MCC Spirit of Cricket but spirit, as you know, is volatile by nature and hence all Modi was left to adhere to was Kingfisher spirit. So I seriously object to your diatribe against Modi. It's just not in the right spirit, maan.

the change is for good som!

hmmm..you have point...he might have thought of mcc's spirit as another brand like kingfisher spirit...? hic...
