negative aspects of shane warne’s captaincy…

shared by straight point on Tuesday, April 28, 2009

shane warne has proved time and again that how good a leader he is…

he led rajasthan royals to ipl title last year…and if in current tournament they are still considered force to reckon with…its only coz of him…

but to me he fall short of being great leader…coz he has made his team look like robots that follow him blindly…he has made his team totally dependent on him…they can't see beyond his shoulders...so much so that it’s difficult to imagine rajasthan royals without him leading…

this is why they are faltering when batting…specially chasing…since there is nobody to control them in middle...they don’t know how to respond to those crucial moments…

small pleasures of life...

this is why we see the record seventh wicket partnership in ipl…when he was at crease…it can’t be mere coincidence…

you can see him gesturing profoundly…giving instructions to fielders…bowlers…on almost every ball…that now he wants slower ball…now bouncer…etc…though it provides great spectacle…but it also shows that he is all over the place…and more than the team show…it’s becoming a show of one man…so over powering that rather than team getting its due credit…recognition…its warney who runs away with all credit...praise…while it augers well for him…but the same cannot be said about team…

good leaders always give space…the right to fail…they let go sometimes…interfering or offering to guide only when needed…and most importantly always look out to groom somebody to carry on legacy…which am afraid is not happening with rajasthan royals…

one can argue that there is smith as ready made leader available to them whenever warne decides to hand his boots…but i am getting this feeling that somehow smith seems disinterested…he might be feeling inhibited by warne’s leadership…or whatever…but one can sense his uneasiness…which reflects through his performances...his demeanor...

it will be nothing but a cultural shock to them…if and when they will report to a different captain…coz i don’t see him playing more than one season…rajasthan royals better start preparing now if they want smooth transition of leadership from inevitable ‘vacuum’…if they want their team to be strong…competitive…as much as it appears today under the leadership of shane warne…

Well, apparently while Warnie is bowling, Smith helps set the field. They kind of share some aspects of the job, but Warnie's the real captain. Anyone can tell.

I think Warnie just supports the players a lot, and his captaincy may be ingenious, but if the players are relying on him for mental support, I say go for it.

Solid fundas SP, sound inspired like Fake did in his last piece!

Yusuf Pathan needs Warne's kid gloves more than most, and in the last game when he held out to short fine, i knew then, only one option left: they all gotta wear a heart shaped locket with warne's pic. warne of course can nurse his game with someone else's

amy...infact he is supporting them to much...while he should let go sometimes...much the same way when kid learns to walk...if parents keep holding him...how he will learn...?

straight point said...

...or any captain who comes next goes under the knife to look exactly like warne...much like face-off...? :)

before anyone link me with fake...let me clarify...i always look for legacy aspect when i talk about leaders...and much before fake...i noted the same aspect of ganguly's when he retired...

(thank god i wrote that before fake happened... ;-))

Pan,
You will obviously follow it up with a piece on Dhoni.:)

hahaha...ott...the way csk going down (and out?)...it's a definite possibility...

sp: I doubt with any other captain with that team, they would have won last year. Lets give him a test -- lets send him to KKR and see what happens?

straight point said...

not even a doubt RS...its definite that they would have not won...

lets send him to KKR and see what happens?he will fail...

there are too many egos working there...srk, ganguly buchanan...for a captain like warne to succeed there can't be better team than royals...if you are getting my drift... :)

SP,

you make a very valid point there! if it wasn't for his exploits last year as captain, his gesturing all over the park would have been called obsession!

straight point said...

thanks ankit...

it is bit obsessive...irrespective of they win or lose...coz warne is same... :)

SP,

anytime bro! actually the key word in the above post, was 'called', warne is not being 'called' anything because he is successful!

i got the drift now ankit... :)

SP u really have the ability to go against the flow of the world's thoughts ;-).. or maybe just mine buddy..

Your post was proven otherwise by today's match.. Smith looking interested and Pathan on fire..

I don't think what Warne does is negative. He has a very young and inexperienced team and I think they need guidance and a mentor like Warne.

Had Munaf bowled that bouncer, maybe RR would have won without a Super Over.

Either way, thats Warne's way of captaining the team and it led them to the title last year. So its deifnitely the right way IMO.

But i do agree with you that after him RR will not have a leader. That is absolutely true.

But then i don't see Warne playing just another season. I believe he will play IPL 3.0 with RR and when his contract is up he will bag another 3 year contract with another franchise and that too at a higher pay! He will lead them to the title too!

:-)

may be his personal performance is declined…but as far as captaincy is concerned, he is giving his full contribution with experience to his team and hopefully they will return…

so it was 'cultural' shock to you as well Q... ;-))

in a way you hv corroborated my views that its one man show and he is so empowering that its almost impossible to imagine RRs without warne...and thats what i wanted to convey...that team RR is overawed and overshadowed by him...

anyway...i dont like leader who leave vacuum instead of legacy...it tells something about leader as well as system who lets it happen this way...

neither it is a cultural 'shock' nor the case of corroborating your views . as an leader of such an inexperienced team, it is SW's moral duty to dominate in every corner of the ground and he is, at least, doing well.

If SW is doing so what 'others'are doing?

I repeat my comment:

If SW is doing so(as you said) what 'others'are doing?

Some very good points there SP and I agree with the fact that they need to groom someone. But lets give him that chance before dismissing him as leaving a vacuum, there is plenty of time left still.

Also, I do think Warne has empowered with players with responsibility and self-belief, see the way he handled both the batting and bowling during the super over. Compare that to Mallya's Pietersen, who doesn't seem to have done any research on his team and has picked a batting line-up solely of internationals and an ex India T20 opener, and we've all seen how well that has paid off. So in his own way, Warne is doing far more than most when it comes to preparing his players for bigger challenges, another example is how much Munaf Patel's attitude seemed to change after joining RR.

A last question, "this is why they are faltering when batting…specially chasing…since there is nobody to control them in middle"... surely this begs the question, how come essentially the same batting line-up managed to do well last year?

kinka i said that for Q...

should i repeat it twice...? ;-))

straight point said...

thanks again A...

if you would have noticed it was the calm and calculated approach of warne the bat on more than one occasion...despite the heroics of watson and pathan...which saw them home and won title...

munaf as dhoni has noted earlier is the kind of guy who don't think too much and follows instructions and warne does exactly this way...same goes for pathan...

but that's beside the point...

warne like others is on three years contract and this is his second year...the gap of another one year is sufficient to groom the next leader and if they wont start now thinking there is much time left...wont it be like waiting bit late...?

(btw if you didn't know...RR is my adopted team with first team of course is 3Ds)

SP, your observation is spot on but I guess this is their tried, tested and trusted way.

I thought I was reading Buchanan's post where his multiple-fatherhood....I mean multiple-captaincy theory was being bandied about in disguise!)

May be you are right in saying that Warne is all over the place, but one thing is certain, he just gets the best out of each player. i still believe RR are one of the weakest sides on paper and if not for Warne, they will not stand a chance. He is exceptional.

Why think about grooming someone when the team wants to win matches and if Warne, the captain wants it to do his way, so be it.

When Warne does go away, let us suppose after 3 Ipl's, if he had won RR may one more IPL or come close to winning it, I am sure noone would complain if they have one bad year after that in absence of a groomed leader.

So as far as I am concerned, i dont mind Warne continuing in the same fashion as long as he is there.

straight point said...

vyom...if you notice i have no objection in going the way he is going...my problem is with grooming...and if they can do it timely...why to have even one bad year for the same...?

cheers!
