first day first show...of a real 'test' match...

shared by straight point on Wednesday, March 18, 2009

after witnessing dull test matches on dead pitches in west indies where the doses of thrills came from the incompetency of both teams...where we argued who deserved to lose more rather than who deserved to win...comes a test match which has everything in it...

good pitch...flat pitch...

good umpiring...bad umpiring...

good bowling...bad bowling...

bad batting...brilliant batting...

two centuries in a score of 280 odd...

wickets falling in heap...not looking like taking a wicket...

top order culled...no. 8 batsman allowed to score century at a strike rate he won't even dream against lessor teams...

two openers passed on tricky late overs as scoring opportunities...

both teams facing end of match press conference counting positives...

..and all this happened in just the first day of a test match!

now if this can not be called a real 'test' match...enlighten me...

sessions at 2-1, but it's a tough one to call.

vettori has a test avg of 27+, 3000+runs, 3 hundreds. Very similar stats to Richard Hadlee battingwise, one ton more in fact

indeed NC...tough one to call...i think first hr of today will reveal who is in front more...

right now i think india will be feeling disappointed to let them score almost 300 after 60/6...

i was particularly disappointed by third session...and how we leaked runs...i an almost auto pilot mode...

ultimately tough day for NZ.
Vittori is a gentle cricketer. Most of the time he save NZ from crises,
He has done his job very luminously particularly when there was 61/6 at the board.
Not only he depleted the time on the pitch, but played amazing inning….
To me, he turned the pitch to bat…pitch was the same for all…

pitched eased considerably kinka...but taking nothing away from vettori...he lead from the front and with his limited stroke play showed what temperament can do if you don't have that much skill...

having said that i am disappointed that he was allowed to score at such a rate with his limited stroke play...

his dedication was an example of leadership. for 7-8 down player, pitch condition matters, SP? if so, still it was a great effort.

Well said sir. This match has had everything thus far. India did well to bowl them out and score a few runs today itself....if they had allowed them to linger till much later, the match might have shifted more significantly to the home team. Right now it is up to the Indian bats to tilt it again in our favour...bat two days...and then pray Harbhajan is either not required to do much or if is, then he bowls as the striker he used to be on a pitch which is helping spinners too.

Good chance for India to take an early lead...but I suspect NZ will have a few twists and turns planned for tomorrow as well.

By the way SP maan...I have been noticing the changing headers of your website over the time...believe me, you come up with some stunning designs and it has become a sort of game for me....I'm curious to know what your blog's wearing that day. Nice effect today...it's a good design.

thanks SB!

kya karoon ye design ka keeda shaant hi nahi hota... :)

coming back to match...i am pretty confident that our depth will see us thru...the way viru started the innings reflects the mood of eager camp...plus having seen the way pitch behave would also be a plus point...

somebody will have to shake harbhajan to senses coz he is just going thru motions like an aimless dart...

he is neither taking wickets not stemming the flow of runs and if this goes on india must look for alternate options...

i guess the real match for indian batting begins this 3.30 am!

the indian bowlers sans bhajji didn't disappoint tho!

and harry potter has made even me happy, for the way he batted, is what thrill test matches are made of, u don't see a no.8 scoring a 100 in any other form of the game!

What a captain, Dan!
And it may not be a Sobers innings from Ryder but it was definitely sober. Raise a roast to him.

som i am not sure about his captaincy but definitely a great player showcasing what temperament can do if you don't have that much talent...

and jessey...the drunkard played the most sober innings in otherwise somber circumstances...
