is ponting next...?

shared by straight point on Wednesday, January 28, 2009

so malik was finally relieved from captaincy after disastrous home series…

i think, it's time CA too follow the suite and save ponting the batsman they have… the last link of that golden era which seems like a mirage the way ozies are performing under him for quite a while now…

wins are coming like the losses used to happen to them...

he has led oz to first home test series loss after 17 years…before surrendering border-gavaskar trophy meekly to india…

under him oz has not won major odi tournament at home for more than couple of seasons…add to it the serious thrashing they are getting from proteas…

and more importantly he has led oz to more controversies than all other oz captains put together i can think of…

you name it and he has it in his resume…

i do feel ponting has already exceeded his use by date as captain…

he is captaining australia for around 6-7 years now and the staleness in his leadership is getting blatantly exposed with each match...no wonder australia too seems to have embraced his staleness...looking more like a insipid bunch of players rather than a team…

it’s high time he is relieved from his job at the time when oz are looking to rebuild their team…it will only be more appropriate if they build it with new captain who will come with fresh ideas and vision for the team…

this brings me to michael clarke...

michael clark has been groomed for the next captain of australia…they have put so much in terms of future investment on him...and as if working on cue…seems to be finding his groove just at the right time…with his performances as well as demeanor on field…

this is just about the perfect time he is handed over the captaincy of oz team when scoring good...is high on confidence…and when his place in all forms of game is indisputable…

although it won't change the oz fortune in jiffy...but one change that will be evident from day one is that we all will be spared of ponting's mid-pitch conferences after every delivery where he apparently discusses his fluctuating stock values in this time of meltdown...

It's just not because of Ponting Australia is sliding down....overall team performance is not good...One can't blame it all on Ponting...I agree that he involved in many controversies...but what can any captain do unless he has the support from the team in terms of their performance...

sri...when team does well the first person who gets the credit is captain of that team then anyone else...so its natural the he will have to cope the flak which are coming with regular defeats...

also since he isn't showing any leadership qualities for quite some time now...they way he has handled certain issues on and off field...

even steve waugh though playing good was removed from captaincy when oz failed to reach finals of triangular series in australia...

is ponting better than him?

Srini said...

certainly not.....As a captain he has to make sure that all the new players settle soon...If he can't do it...he can be sacked...

exactly sri... :)

There are enough calls for Ponting's in Australia to make one sit up and take notice.

The past captains of recent Australian cricketing history have had some avchievement in player-building and/or team building. AB has many to his credit...Taylor has Warne and Glenda, Waugh has the Hayden-Langer combo and tarnsformational philosophy of mental disintegration which worked so well....makes you wonder, what does Ponting have?

One player Ponting has developed/shaped....one new direction he has given to the team other than down, deceit and disgruntulation...difficult to name one

All he has done as captain is to make them a bunch of poor winners (when they can manage it or stage-manage it). In my mind, he was long past his sell-by date...the long puffy tin has now exploded on the shelf. What are they waiting for now?

Obviously there are more issues than the captaincy, but Ponting has never been a great decision maker, even when the team was stronger. What we have seen of Clarke looks good. It makes sense...

Ponting has a knack of bowling first if he thinks the opposition is bad and they can have an early night

I remember in 2003 SL made < 100 against Aus A in a limited overs match

The next game, Ponting fielded first at the SCG and SL made 350+

and Edgbaston of course

Australia also have a habit of throwing off the captain as a player entirely, rather than having a former captain in the team.

I think Ponting will stay.

SR Waugh averaged about 30 in his last ODI season, which is his career par but he was not the best at ODI. Ponting won;t be dropped

from my point of view ponting is not serious about his status in team. this is the right time he should move at least from his position..
He should more concentrate on his duties rarther than involving in controversies. Otherwise Michael Clark is the man in waiting...

thanks for the link homer...

australian cricket will be back...hmmm...not sure where ponting will be cooling his heels then... ;-)

very well put SB!

i think if you stretch it a bit only player he can point is symonds...

but he has so many negatives that its hard to find some positives of his long term...

the more they will wait to relieve him more time it will take before they can really say 'australian cricket will be back'...

straight point said...

yes jonathan...one does the investment looking at the future...which CA did in michael clark and now when the time is ripe they are waiting to take that move...

puzzling...!

straight point said...

yes YM...the need him very much as batsman but the same cant be said about punter the captain...

let clark take over the reign and use ponting's experience to re-shape the oz team...

but i think more than fans CA seems to be in denial mode...

done jrod!

i think now it has become his second nature to get indulge in one controversy or other kinka...its time the limelight is taken away from him so that he can serve oz more as batsman which they need very badly...

At this stage it will be futile to remove him their team is going through rebuilding process, the new captain will not be able to get better results.
His personal form has dipped which should be a serious concern, but right now they should keep him and just focus on rebuilding.

wasim bhai...any team which looks for rebuilding from scratch need strong leadership on and off field which unfortunately (for ozies not us) not coming from punter...

the pressure on them to perform is getting manifold after each series they are loosing and i am afraid they will loose ponting the batsman in this bid...
