So the bidding is over...and we are seeing lots of smiling faces around...some are surprised (ponting, macgrath) some are stunned (symonds) and some are simply overwhelmed...
for purist there are concerns of invasion of oodles of money...its effects on cricket we all love...some are concerned about shifting of power base to subcontinent or more aptly india...there are uneasy, but i dare say helpless, voices who are ranting about how india controlling world cricket through money...
but overall i am not overtly concerned...
for two things...
first, when everybody was falling over each other for his share of ipl pie there was one one outstanding almost unreal gesture from vvs of refusing to be an icon so that hyderabad team has more budget to bid players...its takes courage, the character to stand out from rat race...somehow i feel cricket will be in good hands and that game will take care of itself...
another was Manoj Tiwari's story...
i read somewhere that when he heard his 'sold out amount' he was simply numb for some moments and when he regained his composure he said he would like to build a house for his parents who struggled all through their life to put them in english medium schools...
tiwari is not alone...there are lots of players who have come from very humble background and seeing their dream are coming true...its not as if that playing for india was anything less...but so much money overnight is something else...you do need money as well to realize dreams to life...
so i am happy...coz first ICL and then IPL have done their bits to realize so many dreams...
but i am concerned too...about cricket...no...robotic cricket...
with so many players from different zones and countries (not necessarily from their own as ishant will be playing for kolkatta while he is from delhi) will be playing with each other...and emphasis will be on all aspects of game...batting...bowling...fielding...we will see players becoming as uncle from cricket with balls says PROBOT...
are we assembling a line of PROBOTS...??
coz every body will be playing same cricket...no flair of a region...no flair player...just simply plain robotic cricket...

The point you make about Tiwary is apt.
IPL has the power to change a pauper into a prince.
The term IPL is easily related to EPL so the idea is pretty clear. unfortunately, in my books, this is not going to be good for the game.

more burnouts! cricket will be like rock n roll where, "it's better to burn out, than to fade away". the stars will shine brighter albeit shorter. Ronaldo's career, injuries often comes to mind.

football is still played for 90 minutes be it EPL or olympics...
here we are talking about T20 and how the same player will carry the set mindsets in longer versions...
VVs gesture was very sweet... kind of shows that for a person who doesn't feature in all the formats is bothered about the cricket on the whole. Tiwary's story is touching and you have aptly pointed out that there are several cricketers around the world and especially in the asian countries, where money was and still is a struggle... that's why I don't buy the thought on why cricketers shouldn't make large money. They are the bread winners of the sport itself.

It sure is well said. I share all the concerns that u do SP, however in a way I think it will be good for cricket as a whole as it may create more skilled players, at least for the T20 game. I also think the domestic players nd the U-22 players will benefit from the presence of senior citizens of the game.
Its right to think that Ishant Sharma while playing against Delhi or Harbajhan Singh playing against Mohali and Yuvraj Singh, who has been his Punjab state team mate for 15 years or so, would play with the same energy that that portray for India - maybe they won't but overtime the will to win (cos thats what sportsmen have in them) and the will to perform (cos thats what professionals do to earn that extra dollar) is what will suffice.
VVS Laxman's gesture was indeed a great one and a rare one. Wish him and Hyderabad all the best.
Along with Tiwary, I think a lot of young Indian players have benefited the same way - Raina, both the Sharmas, Uthappa, Gambhir, RP Singh, and even Dhoni, Yuvi, and Bhajji - all these guys are very very young.

That seems to be good. If the players like Manoj Tiwari are given financial security then it is of course a praiseworthy initiative. However, the major concern is that you will not find many players like Tiwari’s background. The players like, Yuvraj, Dhoni are already solvent financially. So, BCCI is making some players simply richer while many other cricketers are earning a small amount by playing in Ranji Trophy. If financial security can not ensured for all the cricketers then it does not resembles the overall development of cricket what BCCI is claiming.

but some part of it is already done by BCCI though on ICL threat...playing for domestic cricket is not financially constrain as it used to be...we are surely getting there...
I think the game of cricket has got to move with the times and with these games being played in the evening time in India means there will virtually be a global audience watching. This can only be good for the game long term.
The T20/20 World Cup was everything the 50 Over World Cup was not and I believe it should be a huge success.
